Bayern Munich's initial summer transfer bid for Rio Ngumoha has been revealed, as the Liverpool star continues to impress at Anfield.
The 18-year-old initially made his mark last season, having been signed from the Chelsea academy as a promising prospect for the future. There were already signs of that quality shining through, as Arne Slot gave him some opportunities to make a mark on games from the bench.
While he was being managed carefully at such a young age, there has been a clear desire to see Ngumoha given more time on the pitch, with fans making their feelings clear over the past year by supporting his ability.
This season, under the guidance of Andoni Iraola, there have been more chances to start games and make an impact. Recent performances against the likes of Villarreal have shown just how talented Ngumoha is, and just how much potential there is for him to reach even higher heights.
It's no surprise that there was such interest in the winger's services back in the summer, with Bayern Munich sniffing out an opportunity to try and land the youngster if Liverpool needed to raise funds.
While the Reds batted away an initial response from the Bavarian club, making it clear that no sale would be forthcoming, there was a bid being prepared in the background.
According to The Telegraph, the valuation of that offer was going to be £60 million ($80 million), a sum that may seem small compared to the potential he has to become a top-quality player.
It's clear that the fee was unlikely to tempt Liverpool, which had set a stance on no exit, while other clubs may have faced a dilemma of potential ability and current quality when given such an offer on the table.
The situation at worst may turn out like Callum Hudson-Odoi, who had impressed at Chelsea and became the subject of interest from Bayern Munich. While there were $93 million offers turned down, the winger couldn't quite match expectations and was eventually moved on to Nottingham Forest for just $6.6 million.
Liverpool will have faith that Ngumoha can hit the heights, however, which may be backed up by an extended contract offer in the coming weeks and months.
With just under two years remaining on his deal, a long-term offer can now be signed by the youngster since turning 18, which would secure his future with the Reds for the foreseeable future.
While there is clearly plenty of hype surrounding Ngumoha at Anfield, Iraola has urged caution for him to keep pushing on without the influence of outside noise. “I think every player has to focus on performances, on keeping doing well and improving the things he can improve,” he said in the past week.
“The outside noise, when it’s good, when it’s bad, I think it affects – obviously – but we have to therefore not be affected by those things. You continue to do your job, as good as you can, try to improve the things you can improve and don’t be too affected from the things you can hear.
“When you do well they are going to praise you, when you do bad there are going to be critics but don’t let those things affect too much the performance, which in the end is the most important thing.”
