Manchester United suffer home loss, Liverpool claim maiden Anfield win

Michael Carrick is on the brink as Manchester United coach as his team lost 3-0 to Bournemouth in front of the Old Trafford faithful.

The English Premier League (EPL) match was dominated by the decision of Carrick to bench both captain Bruno Fernandes and forward Matheus Cunha for questioning his tactics and authority respectively.

On the pitch, the team was all over the place and was picked apart by the visitors who scored twice in the first half through Rayan and Marcus Tavernier, before Evanilson sealed the easy win in the second half.

Bournemouth had several chances to take the lead and eventually did on 38 minutes when a free kick delivery was met with a precise low shot from Rayan that beat Senne Lammens, Man United goalkeeper, at his near post.

A slip by Leny Yoro allowed Bournemouth sight of goal, and Tavernier slotted home Adrien Truffert’s pass to hand the visitors a healthy two-nil lead at the break.

It was a catalogue of errors from Man United’s players, especially the defenders but Bournemouth failed to make one count until the 71st minute when Lammens misjudged Lewis Cook’s long ball. The costly mistake allowed Evanilson in and the forward slotted high into the empty net to seal the deserved win.

Defeat means Man United are winless in eight consecutive matches in all competitions, and the 20-time EPL winners are closer to relegation, sitting in 16th position with just seven points.

At Anfield, Liverpool won for the first time in front of their fans in the league with a 2-0 victory over high-flying Brighton. Pascal Gross’ own goal and Alexander Isak’s effort sealed all three points for Andoni Iraola’s side. The Reds moved up to fourth position on the log with 15 points from eight matches.

RESULTS

  • Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth
  • Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
  • Hull City 1-1 Brentford
  • Crystal Palace 0-2 Newcastle United
