Silvio Baldini took charge of Italy’s under-21 national football team after winning a web survey conducted by Gazzetta in which tens of thousands of readers voted him the best managerial candidate for Italy, according to a report published on October 17. The vote occurred in June before the choice fell on Mancini. Catapulted into the Under-21 role by Gigi Buffon, Baldini has transformed the squad with a unique philosophy that has won over Italian fans and supporters.

Tactical Success and Modern Play

The results of the Under-21 team have confirmed that Baldini’s nomination was successful. Technically, his national side plays modern football, handles difficulties as a team, easily creates goal-scoring opportunities, and defends effectively by pressing from the first minute to the last. Under his guidance, the squad will play for the European title next summer, with Baldini telling Gazzetta in an interview with Alex F. last week that they are going to win.

A Counter-Current Philosophy

Baldini’s appeal extends beyond results, rooted in his view that he likes football but not the world of football. Amid a sport transformed into a live entertainment machine that has abandoned values, traditions, and history, Baldini stands out as a leader who still believes in the identity of a flag and a jersey. His career features counter-current decisions, notably when he managed Carrarese practically for free, receiving only a promotion bonus and a severance indemnity without a monthly salary.

Defending Italian Heritage

Even when sitting on the bench of the senior national team immediately after Gattuso and the World Cup defeat in Bosnia, Baldini maintained his focus on defending Italian heritage, trusting young players even if they receive little playing time at their clubs, and applying European playing principles. He travels with his boys without support from Mancini’s national team, aside from Pio Esposito, who has always believed in Baldini.
