La Gantoise suffered a 1-2 defeat against Sporting Braga in the Conference League on Thursday, compounding a difficult week that began with a shock domestic cup exit, according to reporting from DHnet. The Belgian side entered the European fixture at the Estádio Municipal de Braga looking to steady their season, but instead returned home with their continental ambitions facing an early hurdle.

The Domestic Stumble at Parc des Roches Precedes European Defeat

Four days before travelling to Portugal, La Gantoise experienced a surprise elimination from the Belgian Cup in the round of 32 against Union Rochefortoise, as detailed by RTBF. Up to that point, Rik De Mil’s squad had enjoyed strong momentum, holding a leading position in the Pro League and playing with consistent authority. In the Conference League opening match, the Buffalos had secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Danish club Aarhus. However, the unexpected cup setback disrupted that rhythm just as the team prepared for their European away fixture.

Braga Navigates Managerial Turmoil and Refereeing Controversy

Sporting Braga hosted La Gantoise under turbulent conditions following a sequence of poor results. The Portuguese club parted ways with manager Carlos Vicens on Tuesday, installing Franclim Carvalho as his successor on short notice, according to Walfoot.be. Alongside the managerial change, Braga published a sharp official statement criticizing the standard of refereeing in Portugal. The club pointed to a 1-2 domestic defeat against Gil Vicente on Monday, arguing that decisive officiating errors—including a contested challenge preceding an equalizer and a denied penalty claim for captain Ricardo Horta—warranted urgent intervention from football authorities.

Tactical Adjustments and Lineup Decisions in Portugal

For the trip to Braga, La Gantoise manager Rik De Mil made notable adjustments to his starting selection. Hyllarion Goore was selected ahead of Matties Volckaert in the visiting lineup, as reported by La Libre.be. Despite tactical shifts aimed at neutralizing the Portuguese side’s attacking threat, the Belgian visitors were unable to contain Braga’s response under their newly appointed technical staff.

La Gantoise Prepares for Anderlecht Match

With this European result, La Gantoise must quickly refocus on domestic competition as they prepare to face Anderlecht. The club’s European campaign now requires a prompt recovery to secure qualification territory in the league phase standings, while Braga looks to use this home victory to stabilize their season under Franclim Carvalho.
