Former Czech Republic national hockey team coach Kari Jalonen has ended his coaching career at age 66 after stepping down from his position at Finnish champion club Tappara Tampere, Športky.sk reported. The surprising resignation came just two months into the new ligue season and after only 13 games behind the bench in Tampere, with club management announcing the decision on a Tuesday morning.

The Sudden Resignation in Tampere

Jalonen’s departure from Tappara caught club executives and players entirely off guard. Following the session, players received urgent messages instructing them to report back to Nokia Arena within an hour, where Jalonen delivered an emotional address explaining that his internal fire had burned out. Tappara general manager Janne Vuorinen told Iltalehti that the news arrived like a bolt from the blue.

At the time of his resignation, Tappara sat 11th in the league standings with 19 points after 13 matches. Despite a sluggish start for the reigning champions, club management had not considered making a coaching change prior to Jalonen’s personal decision. Assistant coach Fredrik Norrena, who previously worked as a video coach for the Czech national team during the 2022–2023 season and served as Jalonen’s assistant in Kölner Haie, took over head coaching duties immediately.

Burnout and the End of a Storied Career

Jalonen pointed directly to a depletion of his mental reserves as the catalyst for his retirement from the sport. “I feel that the driving force of my coaching career was a certain inner drive—a force that pushed both me and my work forward,” Jalonen stated, as reported by Športky.sk.

The Finnish coach exits a career decorated with domestic and international success. A former standout forward born in Oulu, Jalonen previously captured seven domestic league titles, won the Swiss championship twice with SC Bern, and guided the Finnish national team to a silver medal at the 2016 IIHF World Championship.

Legacy with the Czech National Team

Czech hockey fans remember Jalonen most vividly for his tenure guiding the national selection from 2022 to 2023. In 2022, he steered the Czech Republic to a bronze medal at the IIHF World Championship, ending a frustrating decade-long drought without a major tournament podium finish and briefly earning national hero status. After failing to replicate that success at the subsequent world championship, the Czech ice hockey association dismissed him, paving the way for Radim Rulík to take over the bench.

Following his departure from the Czech national program, Jalonen spent time coaching Kölner Haie in Germany’s DEL before returning to Finland ahead of the current campaign to lead Tappara to what management hoped would be a fifth title in six seasons.

Next Steps for Tappara Tampere

With Jalonen stepping away, newly appointed head coach Fredrik Norrena faces an immediate test in Finland’s top flight. The current Liiga season features 17 teams playing at a relentless pace, with the bottom three clubs facing relegation threats at the end of the campaign. Tappara holds a five-point cushion above the relegation zone as Norrena takes the reins for the remainder of the schedule.
