Manchester United Face Relegation Warning in Nightmare EPL Start
Manchester United Manager, Micheal Carrick

Fresh concerns overtook the atmosphere over the weekend as Manchester United continue their miserable start to the 2026/27 Premier League season, darkening the club's direction under the new administration.

Michael Carrick's side have collected just seven points from their opening seven matches and matching a record that has not been seen at Old Trafford in 40 years.

United's latest struggles have placed Carrick under increasing pressure, with the team recording one of their worst starts to a league campaign in the club's history.

The seven-point tally is their worst opening to a first-division season since 1986, while the club's last lower points return at this stage came in the 1921-22 campaign.

United have also recorded the fewest wins by any of their teams in the first seven games since the 1953-54 season, when they failed to win any of their opening seven matches.

The situation has prompted comparisons with previous Manchester United sides that endured similarly poor starts, with their eventual outcomes ranging from respectable recoveries to relegation.

Although a poor opening does not automatically determine how a season will end, the club's history offers a worrying reminder of how badly things can unravel when results fail to improve.

Carrick Under Pressure as United Struggle for Results

United's return of seven points from seven matches has left the club facing uncomfortable questions about its performances and prospects for the remainder of the campaign.

Their slow start has been described as their worst in 40 years, while the pressure on Carrick continues to grow.

The statistics make for particularly grim reading when compared with previous United teams.

No Manchester United side had recorded fewer wins in its opening seven league matches since 1953-54, when the team managed four draws and three defeats without winning a game.

United's current points tally has also been matched by several teams from the club's past, including the sides of

  1. 1989-90,
  2. 1962-63,
  3. 1960-61,
  4. 1928-29 and
  5. 1914-15.

The historical comparison raises a major question:

can Carrick turn the situation around, or could United's poor start become the foundation of another disappointing season?

1921-22: United Suffer Relegation After Six-Point Start

Manchester United's six-point return after their opening seven matches in the 1921-22 campaign was followed by a season that ended in relegation to the Second Division.

It was the club's 26th season in the Football League, but the campaign failed to develop as hoped.

United were relegated for the first time since 1906, making the season one of the most significant failures in the club's early history.

The outcome remains a warning that a poor start can have serious consequences if a team fails to find consistency over the course of a campaign.

1969-70: United Recover After Busby's Departure

The 1969-70 season also began badly for United, who collected six points from their opening seven matches.

The campaign followed the departure of legendary manager Sir Matt Busby, who stepped down after 24 years in charge.

His absence was immediately felt, with new manager Wilf McGuinness waiting until the seventh game, against Sunderland, to record his first victory.

McGuinness eventually helped United recover from their difficult start, and the club finished eighth in the league.

United also reached the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and the League Cup.

1938-39: United Finish 14th After Slow Start

Manchester United collected five points from their opening six matches in the 1938-39 season, recording one win, two draws and three defeats.

Club secretary Walter Crickmer had taken over as manager during the middle of the previous campaign and continued in the role throughout the following season.

United's only victory in their first six league matches came against Birmingham City.

The team struggled to recover from that opening and eventually finished 14th in the league.

1989-90: Ferguson Survives Pressure to Win the FA Cup

The 1989-90 season is one of the most notable examples of Manchester United recovering from a disastrous start.

United collected five points from their opening seven matches, recording two wins, one draw and four defeats.

The poor results led to growing calls for manager Sir Alex Ferguson to leave the club before he eventually established the dominant side that would define an era of English football.

United finished 13th in the league, a disappointing position for a club of their stature.

However, Ferguson's team rescued the campaign by winning the FA Cup, defeating Crystal Palace 1-0 in a replay after the first meeting ended in a draw.

The triumph proved crucial to Ferguson's future at Old Trafford and remains a reminder that early-season struggles do not always tell the full story of a campaign.

This particular season offers Carrick a historical example of how a manager can respond to pressure, although replicating Ferguson's turnaround would require a significant improvement in results.

1986-87: Ferguson Arrives After Atkinson's Dismissal

Manchester United's difficult start to the 1986-87 campaign ultimately led to a major change in the dugout.

The team collected just four points from its opening seven matches, recording one win, one draw and five defeats.

Ron Atkinson was already under pressure when United began the season with losses against Arsenal, West Ham United and Charlton Athletic.

The poor results continued, and Atkinson was eventually dismissed following a fourth-round League Cup defeat to Southampton.

Ferguson was appointed immediately afterwards and took charge of the team during the season.

He guided United to an 11th-place finish, beginning a managerial era that would eventually transform the club's fortunes.

The campaign displays how a poor start can lead to a managerial change at Old Trafford.

1953-54: Busby's Side Recovers to Finish Fourth

Manchester United's 1953-54 campaign began with four points from seven matches, following four draws and three defeats.

It was the worst start of Sir Matt Busby's managerial career at the club, with United going without a victory for eight matches.

However, the team eventually recovered and finished fourth in the league.

The lesson here is, for a campaign that had begun with considerable difficulty, even a winless opening stretch does not necessarily prevent a team from competing near the top of the table by the end of the season.

1972-73: Managerial Change Helps United Avoid Relegation

United's four-point start to the 1972-73 campaign was followed by another season of uncertainty.

Frank O'Farrell's side opened with three defeats against Ipswich Town, Liverpool and Everton and went nine matches without a victory before beating Derby County 3-0.

The improvement proved short-lived, however, and O'Farrell was dismissed in December following a 5-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Tommy Docherty replaced him and brought George Best back into the fold after the winger had been exiled from the team.

Docherty eventually guided United to survival, although the club only narrowly avoided relegation.

1930-31: United's Worst Start Ends in Relegation

Manchester United's 1930-31 season stands out as one of the darkest campaigns in the club's history.

The team lost its opening seven league matches without earning a single point, making it the worst start among the seasons highlighted in the historical comparison.

The problems continued well beyond the opening weeks, with United losing 12 consecutive matches at the start of the campaign.

They managed just seven victories throughout the entire season and finished with 22 points from 42 games, alongside a goal difference of -62.

The disappointing campaign ended in relegation to the Second Division.

Manager Herbert Bamlett was dismissed with six matches remaining, while club secretary Walter Crickmer took over as acting manager for the remainder of the season.

The results made the campaign one of the worst in United's history and demonstrated the consequences of failing to arrest a losing run.

Can Carrick Avoid Another Manchester United Disaster?

Manchester United's current seven-point start places them among a long list of teams that have struggled badly during the opening weeks of a league campaign.

History, however, offers no single outcome.

The six-point start of 1921-22 ended in relegation, while the 1969-70 team recovered to finish eighth.

Ferguson's side finished 13th in 1989-90 but won the FA Cup, and Busby's team climbed to fourth after its poor opening in 1953-54.

Other campaigns ended with managerial dismissals, narrow escapes from relegation or significant changes in direction.

The common factor is that poor early results leave little room for complacency. United must improve their performances and points return if they are to avoid allowing the pressure to intensify.

Whether the season becomes a story of recovery or another painful chapter will depend on how quickly the team responds.
