UG20: Pak Shaheens close in on knockouts after double over Wanderers

Pak Shaheens Cricket Club moved closer to knockout qualification after completing a double over Wanderers Cricket Club at the Florida Oval on Sunday, winning the morning match by 37 runs and the afternoon encounter by 24 runs.

Shaheens had to fight for both victories, but their bowlers proved the difference, dismissing Wanderers for 75 in the first game and 91 in the second to complete a clean sweep.

In the morning match, Shaheens won the toss and elected to bat but suffered an early collapse, losing three wickets for just five runs.

  • Pak Shaheens CC 112 all out in 19.2 Overs
  • Wanderers CC 75 all out in 13.1 Overs
  • Pak Shaheens CC won by 37 Overs

Yasir Malik made four, Athar Ali fell for a duck, and Abdul Basit Habib managed only one run as Wanderers took control.

Captain Raheel Sarwar steadied the innings with 37 off 29 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes. Abdullah Kabir added 13, while Mohsin Riaz scored 17 off 12 balls and Shoaib Majeed made 10.

However, Wanderers kept taking wickets, with Eric Mukisa claiming three for 24 and Magwa Arthur taking two for 17. Shahens were eventually bowled out for 112 in 19.2 overs, with extras contributing 16 runs, including 14 wides and two no-balls.

Wanderers needed 113 to win but struggled from the start, losing Okema Julius for one and Mukisa for one to leave them at seven for two.

Edgar Mudoola offered some resistance with 26 off 29 balls, while Ivan Kakande scored 12. Christabel Abenaitwe also made 12, but the rest of the batting line-up failed to make a meaningful contribution.

Yasir led Shaheens’ attack with four wickets for 12 runs in 3.1 overs, while Sarwar took three for 16 and Riaz claimed one wicket. Wanderers were bowled out for 75 in 13.1 overs, handing Shaheens a 37-run victory.

The afternoon match proved more competitive, with Shaheens again batting first after winning the toss.

  • Pak Shaheens CC 115 all out in 17.4 Overs
  • Wanderers CC 91 all out in 17.1 Overs
  • Pak Shaheens CC won by 24 runs

Yasir scored 30 off 28 balls, including three sixes, while Sarwar top-scored with 40 from 38 deliveries, hitting two fours and three sixes. Abdullah Kabir contributed 15, and Abdul Basit Habib added nine.

Shaheens were well placed at 99 for four before a late collapse saw them lose their final six wickets for just 16 runs. They were bowled out for 115 in 17.4 overs, with extras adding 12.

Kakande was Wanderers’ standout bowler, taking six wickets for 14 runs in 3.4 overs, including a hat-trick. Waheed Abdul Sserwadda claimed two for 17, while Loykeen Bamuturaki and Mukisa took one wicket each.

Chasing 116, Wanderers again failed to build a strong partnership. Okema scored 30 off 31 balls, while Kakande made 19 and Mukisa added seven.

Shaheens kept the pressure on through regular wickets, with Sarwar taking four for 14 in four overs. Simon Okecho claimed three for 23, while Ullah Hafiz Muhammad Zia took two for five in 2.1 overs.

Wanderers were bowled out for 91 in 17.1 overs, giving Shaheens a 24-run win and completing their second victory of the day.

The two wins strengthened Shaheens’ push for a place in the knockout stages, with Sarwar contributing with both bat and ball, while Yasir and the rest of the bowling attack ensured Wanderers never settled.

The group is currently still open, with Ceylon Lions in third with 6 points in 4 matches, while those above in SKLPs and Pak Shaheens have played 6 and 8 matches respectively with 10 points.

Elsewhere, Tornado Cricket Club completed a double over Kifaru Cricket Club at the Lugogo Cricket Oval, winning the morning game by 16 runs before taking the afternoon encounter by eight wickets.

Avengers Cricket Club also swept their double-header against Nile Cricket Club at the Jinja Oval. Avengers won the morning match by five wickets before recording a commanding 135-run victory in the afternoon.

Saturday’s UG20 double-header between Aboojo Cricket Club and Soroti City Cricket Club at the Lugogo Cricket Oval was abandoned after rain disrupted the day’s programme.

A morning downpour left the ground unplayable. Groundsmen worked to prepare the field for the afternoon match, but their efforts were not enough to make it fit for play, forcing the second encounter to be abandoned as well.
