Olipa: We are just getting started

Gerald Olipa has promised more match-winning performances after inspiring Uganda’s Cricket Cranes to an 87-run victory over Zambia in their opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier C in Abuja, Nigeria, on Tuesday.

Olipa smashed 82 off 42 balls to guide Uganda to 195/6 in 20 overs before the bowlers dismissed Zambia for 108 in 17.3 overs at the NCF Oval 1.

“It was a good feeling to score runs in the first game of the tournament. Getting 82 for the team and helping us reach 195 was a good feeling,” Olipa said.

The batter struck five fours and seven sixes to give Uganda a strong foundation and earn the Player of the Match award.

His performance has also boosted the team’s confidence as they seek to build on their winning start.

“I think it really gives us momentum and confidence going into the next games. We will back ourselves and win the games that are coming up,” he added.

Olipa was delighted with his individual recognition and believes more awards could follow.

“I’m really proud of winning the Man of the Match award, and I believe more are coming,” he said.

Captain Riazat Ali Shah also played a key role, scoring 38 off 20 balls as Uganda posted a competitive total. He later contributed with the ball, helping the Cricket Cranes maintain control.

Uganda’s bowlers then completed the job, with Joseph Baguma taking four wickets for 44 runs in his four overs.

Zambia struggled in the chase, with Joyebbhai Vali Chand top-scoring with 38 off 28 balls. His effort wasn’t enough to keep his side out of trouble, and they were bowled out for 108.

Uganda had won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that paid off handsomely as they dominated both innings to secure an 87-run victory.

The Cricket Cranes will now look to build on the result as they head into their next match against Lesotho on Wednesday and the rest of the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup qualification campaign.
