Rugby player risked being banned from sport forever after 'disgusting' moment mid-game

Rugby fans are furious and demanding a player is banned for life after he was caught committing a horrific foul live during a match.

On Thursday evening, two teams competing in Wales’s semi-professional rugby union competition, Super Rygbi Cymru, clashed in a fixture that has gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

During the match, Curtis Gregory, who played as a second-row forward for Ebbw Vale, one of the two clubs, was shown a red card for a disgusting foul that has since led to calls that he should be banned from playing for the rest of his life.

The incident happened during the Super Rygbi Cymru fixture between Llandovery and Ebbw Vale on Thursday, 22 October.

Ebbw Vale won the match 31–15, but it's not the result that has gone viral as fans were outraged to see a shocking foul that Gregory made on a Llandovery during the match that led to him being shown a straight red card.

The incident happened late in the first half of the match as the two sides contested a ruck as Gregory took the opportunity to stamp on a Llandovery player’s outstretched leg, seemingly to try to cause a serious injury.

Immediately, the Llandovery player, who was thankfully not injured by the disgusting action, shot up and started fighting with Gregory before their teammates split them up.

Referee Craig Evans quickly showed Gregory a red card leaving Ebbw Vale a player short for the remainder of the match.

Not long after the incident happened, rugby fans took to social media to share the clip and demand that Gregory's punishment is among the most severe in the sport's history.

"Do that in the street, police get involved. Don’t understand why it’s any different on the pitch," one fan wrote.

Another agreed, adding: "That should be jail time. Hiding assault behind sports just isn’t good enough."

One angry fan wrote : "Absolute tool. Disgusting and not even the most bias Ebbw Vale supporter should have any complaints about a lengthy ban. Just glad the Llandovery player got up, shame he didn't give him what he deserved!

With one suggesting: "That was horrific. He could have crippled that man for life. He should never be allowed to play rugby again,"

The red card means Gregory missed the remainder of the match, and could face a further suspension as per World Rugby’s sanction table for stamping or trampling.

Low-end fouls typically leads to missing two matches, while the most severe could range from six to even 52 matches or weeks of suspension.

A lifetime ban is possible in exceptional cases where the offence actually causes serious consequences to the victim’s health.
