Amakhosi entered the match aiming for their fourth consecutive win, a target they accomplished to remain the only team with a perfect record this season. After this win, coach Vela Khumalo’s squad held the top position in the standings with 12 points.
The Phefeni Glamour Boys started strongly, applying pressure on their opponents from the very beginning. Their persistence was rewarded in the 13th minute when Keitumetse Lesia struck first, scoring with a right-footed shot from within the box, directing the ball to the center of the goal. Matala Makhubo was credited with the assist, delivering a perfectly timed through ball.
Chiefs continued to assert their dominance and increased their lead in the 30th minute, thanks to Tashiel Rugunanan. The promising left-back found the back of the net with a left-footed free-kick, securing a comfortable advantage for Amakhosi as they headed into halftime.
This goal was a significant milestone in Rugunanan’s journey at the club. He advanced through the Chiefs youth ranks, having represented the club at U13, U15, and U17 levels before moving up to the reserve team this season.
Following the break, Chiefs kept the pressure on, extending their lead in the 49th minute with a goal from Steven Mendes.
This goal came about when Mendes capitalized on a mistake by goalkeeper Morwasi Semenya, who, in a moment of pressure, failed to clear the ball effectively. The ball hit Mendes before bouncing into the net, marking Chiefs’ third goal of the day.
Just 10 minutes later, Amakhosi brought their tally to four with a goal from Makhubo. The winger finished confidently with a right-footed shot from inside the box, placing the ball in the center of the goal.
Neo Bohloko played a crucial part in the buildup; after his initial shot was blocked, he retrieved the ball and assisted Makhubo, who made no mistake in capitalizing on the chance.
Chiefs continued their impressive performance for the remainder of the match but were unable to add to their score. The match concluded with a 4-0 victory, solidifying Khumalo’s squad’s flawless start to the season with four wins out of four.
In another encounter at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium during the Saturday festival, Sekhukhune United secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Chippa United.
This result only deepens the struggles for veteran coach Dan Malesela, as Chippa has now conceded 16 goals over four matches.
The Chilli Boys had previously encountered a heavy 9-2 defeat against Golden Arrows and were also defeated 2-0 by Siwelele. They managed to earn a 2-1 win in their opening match against Stellenbosch but have continuously struggled defensively, with the latest loss to Sekhukhune compounding their difficulties early in the season.
In other news, Golden Arrows triumphed with a 1-0 victory over Richards Bay in the KwaZulu-Natal derby at Princess Magogo Stadium.
Meanwhile, AmaZulu suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
This loss marked the first time AmaZulu conceded a goal this season, ending their impressive defensive streak in the early matches of the campaign.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) reserve league continues on Sunday, with two matches scheduled during the festival at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium.
The first match will see the defending champions Orlando Pirates face Kruger United, followed by TS Galaxy taking on Mamelodi Sundowns in the venue’s concluding match.
Meanwhile, two additional fixtures are set to take place at different venues, including another KwaZulu-Natal derby at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium where Durban City will challenge Milford.
Additionally, two-time DStv Diski Challenge champions Stellenbosch will host Siwelele at Idas Valley Sports Ground as the weekend’s reserve league action continues.
