‘They expected the chairman to do that’ – Brandon Truter responds to Chippa exit talk

Chippa United head coach Brandon Truter has come out swinging against media speculation surrounding his future, insisting that a false narrative is being driven to push him out of the Chilli Boys hot seat.

Truter’s sharp response comes on the heels of a humbling 4-0 defeat to Golden Arrows on Saturday afternoon in the Carling Knockout Cup Last 16, which piled further pressure on the Eastern Cape side after an indifferent start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.

The Chilli Boys delivered a poor performance, leaking two goals in each half against the hard-running Arrows at the King Zwelithini Stadium. Before crashing out of the Carling Cup, Chippa lost to Betway Premiership newcomers Kruger United 1-0.

The recent inconsistent results have put pressure on Truter, who could be next to lose his job in the PSL after several coaches have already been fired this season.

Speaking after the game against Abafana Bes’thende, Truter claimed that the media is pushing the wrong narrative about his future.

WHAT BRANDON TRUTER SAID ABOUT CHIPPA UNITED EXIT TALKS

“There has been a lot said in the media about me still being around at Chippa. I don’t really read much of what’s said in the media, but when I have time I see that they’re saying I should have been fired or whatever; maybe they [media] expected the chairman [Chippa Mpengesi] to do that,” Truter said.

“But Chippa last season, how many points did they have [at this stage]? They had one. So where are we now, and how is the start? The media is driving the narrative that I should be fired. So we are losing coaches in South Africa: Steve Barker, Manqoba [Mngqithi], Rulani Mokwena, Eric Tinkler just came back. We have a lot of young coaches who need guidance, and top coaches are leaving the country.

“Yes, there is pressure; we need to win, and we are entertainers as well, but sometimes we need to be mindful of how we do things. At Chippa there is a culture where we are trying to end the stigma that’s around the media [about chopping and changing of coaches], and the team is doing well at the moment, and there’s progress.

“We conceded four goals today [Saturday], but we don’t concede much in the league. We do create chances; we just need to score them. There’s a lot of positives, the boys are together, I feel sorry for them that we couldn’t progress [in the Carling Cup], but Arrows is a very good team, well done to them.”

CHIPPA UNITED HAS WON ONLY ONE LEAGUE MATCH THIS SEASON

The former Richards Bay FC mentor has been at the helm of the Eastern Cape-based outfit for five months after taking charge just before the end of last season.

However, Truter has managed just one victory in eight Betway Premiership matches this campaign, drawing five and losing two. The Chilli Boys currently sit eighth on the log with eight points.
