Ekstein Delivers 78th-Minute Penalty Drama to Send AmaZulu into War

AmaZulu and Sekhukhune United Advance to Carling Knockout Quarter-Finals Following Key Wins

AmaZulu FC and Sekhukhune United have clinched their spots in the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout Cup after achieving important victories on October 25, 2026. Both teams showcased strong performances to keep their aspirations of winning the prestigious domestic trophy alive.

AmaZulu earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium, while Sekhukhune United secured a convincing 3-1 win over Richards Bay FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

For AmaZulu, substitute Hendrick Ekstein was the hero, calmly scoring a penalty in the second half to secure the win. The match against Kruger United was tightly contested, with both teams creating chances but unable to score in the early stages.

AmaZulu initially threatened with a header from Mondli Mbanjwa that required a fantastic save from Kruger goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou. Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya also contributed to the attack, but AmaZulu couldn't convert their early dominance into goals.

Kruger United gradually found their rhythm and put pressure on the AmaZulu defense. Despite moments of attacking momentum, they lacked the finishing touch to take the lead.

The breakthrough came in the 78th minute when Kruger substitute Tatenda Tavengwa was penalized for a handball in the area. Ekstein confidently converted the penalty, giving AmaZulu a crucial edge.

Kruger fought back desperately for an equalizer, but goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela made a vital late save to deny Lesedi Kapinga, helping AmaZulu secure the win.

This result marks another significant achievement for Arthur Zwane's team, who will now look forward to the quarter-final draw and upcoming matches in the Betway Premiership.

In a separate match, Sekhukhune United displayed a strong performance against Richards Bay, ensuring their advancement to the quarter-finals. Chibuike Ohizu scored the opener in the 53rd minute, followed by Thabang Makubo doubling the lead in the 82nd minute. Although Richards Bay responded with a goal from Nqaba Xulu shortly afterward, Bethuel Muzeu sealed the victory for Sekhukhune with a goal in the 88th minute, resulting in a 3-1 final score.

With these victories, AmaZulu and Sekhukhune join Golden Arrows and Siwelele FC in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals. Several prominent clubs are still vying for qualification, promising further drama as South African football's knockout competition intensifies. The wins provide renewed motivation for AmaZulu and Sekhukhune as they aim for silverware this season.
