Hunt Optimistic About Stellenbosch’s Chances of Reclaiming the Carling Knockout Cup

Stellenbosch FC’s head coach, Gavin Hunt, is optimistic about his team’s prospects in the Carling Knockout Cup after drawing Durban City in the Round of 16. He emphasized the tradition of the competition in surprising outcomes.

The tournament draw took place on Wednesday, with Round of 16 matches set to begin on 24 October.

Stellenbosch enters this competition while still aiming for consistency as they seek to establish their performance in the Betway Premiership.

The Cape Winelands club secured the inaugural Carling Knockout title in 2023, triumphing over TS Galaxy 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 tie at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Hunt is confident in his team’s potential to claim the trophy, especially considering the competition’s trend of underdog victories.

“In any cup competition, anything is possible,” stated Hunt, who previously lifted the trophy with Bidvest Wits during the 2017/18 season, defeating the club now known as Bloemfontein Celtic.

“This competition has a rich history of underdog victories. There have been numerous instances where teams have defied expectations to win this title. The draw’s outcome is crucial due to the location and opponent. An away game poses challenges for us; however, we are fairly accustomed to playing at that venue. It is what it is.”

Hunt is well-acquainted with Durban City, having managed the team during the off-season before his departure in December following a setback against Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Stellenbosch coach feels that this knowledge of his competitors may be advantageous leading up to the cup match.

“I am very familiar with the Durban City squad,” Hunt remarked.

“Many of those players were with me during my tenure last year. Therefore, I know them quite well. Chatsworth provides a great pitch for matches, so there’s usually a lively atmosphere.”

The 62-year-old also recognized that Stellenbosch is undergoing a transitional phase with several player changes.

“We are currently in a transition; a lot of players are coming and going. At this moment, we are primarily focused on quick adjustments. Once we gain some momentum, I’m confident we’ll improve,” Hunt concluded.
