“Definitely one of the strangest championships I’ve ever won,” joked Keegan Masters, the South African racing driver who claimed the top spot in this year’s Porsche Six Carrera Cup Deutschland, following a successful campaign with eight podium finishes and two victories.
“It was a little bit weird because now I’m finishing in P9 in the race but winning the championship.”
Although he finished ninth in the final race at Hockenheimring, Masters accumulated enough points to edge out Dutch rival Flynt Schuring after 16 races, becoming the first South African to win this series. He joined CarTalk with Jacob Moshokoa to unpack his racing journey and what this epic achievement means to him.
He credits his success to his team and the sacrifices he made to show what he can do on international racetracks. Taking his dream beyond South African shores was already a formidable challenge, said Masters.
“We’ve got so much talent in the country, but with our economy it's really difficult to get overseas, find the right team to join or get sponsors. Sponsors are always difficult to find.”
Eventually, when Masters made his way to Europe to compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia, he ended up winning titles in 2024 and 2025. The prize money enabled him to fund his racing career and continue to fly the SA flag in European circuits.
He looks to progress with his team at Proton Competition to endurance racing, highlighting Le Mans as a dream race to compete in.
