Former Manchester United player Angel Di Maria has expressed relief after a man who made threats against his daughter was sentenced to prison until 2034.
The Argentine World Cup champion was signed by the Red Devils for a club record of £59.7 million from Real Madrid in 2014.
However, the club sold him to Paris Saint-Germain for £44 million just one year later, due to his lackluster performance.
At age 38, Di Maria was targeted with a series of alarming threats in 2024 when he announced intentions to return to Rosario Central, his childhood club.
A 45-year-old fan of rival team Newell’s Old Boys, Sergio Di Vanni, was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison by a Rosario court for issuing the threats.
Additionally, a 25-year-old woman received a three-year sentence in June for similar offenses, while another accomplice remains at large.
Di Maria disclosed to the local press, “They attacked my sister’s real estate agency and left a pig’s head with a bullet in its forehead at the site.
“Accompanying it was a note stating that if I returned to Rosario Central, the next head would be that of my daughter, Pia.”
Evidence presented during the trial included gunfire incidents near a gated community where Di Maria owns a property.
Initially hesitant, Di Maria eventually transferred to Rosario from Benfica last year and helped lead them to victory in the Argentine league.
