British-born tennis star is son of England Rugby World Cup winner but plays for France

Felix Balshaw earned his maiden win on the ATP Tour at the Lyon Open on Monday, upsetting world No. 56 Jaime Faria 6-2 4-6 6-3. It was a breakout moment for the 20-year-old, who was born in Leeds but competes under the French flag. It means it was a maiden victory on home soil for Balshaw, who received a wildcard into the ATP 250 event as part of the Next Gen Accelerator programme, giving playing opportunities to up-and-coming players aged 20 and under.

Balshaw marked his first-ever tour-level victory with his signature Thor celebration, walking into the centre of the court and pretending to hit his racket like a hammer. “Some fearless backhands down the line, magnificent serving. And his Thor celebration is always welcomed by his fans,” commentator Robbie Koenig said.

The world No. 186’s victory moves him up to eighth place in the race to the Next Gen Finals, a season-ending tournament for the best players under 21 years old, which has previously been won by the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

After upsetting Faria, Balshaw – who mostly speaks with a standard southern English accent – said: “I have no words. No words at all. It shows all the hard work that I’ve been through with my team finally pays off, and I’m happy to do it in front of a fantastic crowd. Yeah, I have no words. I’m very emotional after this win.

“I mean, in the last game, no [I wasn’t calm]. In the last game, not at all. That’s why I’ve been taking my time a lot, going to the towel as well. But of course, it’s just training over the years, over the matches. I’m very happy that I kept my calm in the last game and pulled through.”

And Balshaw certainly isn’t the only sporting star in his family, as he is the son of Iain Balshaw, who helped England win the 2003 Rugby World Cup. The 47-year-old received an MBE in the New Year Honours list at the end of 2003 following England’s triumph.

The retired rugby union star won 35 caps for England from 2000 to 2008. He also played for Bath, Leeds Carnegie, Gloucester and Biarritz Olympique.

Now, his son is making waves on the professional tennis tour. Balshaw won a maiden ATP Challenger title at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca earlier this year. He also came through qualifying to reach the main draw of an ATP Tour event for the first time in Winston-Salem in August, but lost his opening match.

The 20-year-old will now face one of his countrymen in the second round, as he awaits the winner of an all-French clash between Ugo Humbert and Corentin Moutet. No. 7 seed Humbert is the two-time defending champion. He lifted the trophy in Marseille in 2024 and 2025 before the tournament moved to Lyon this year.

Balshaw started the year ranked outside of the world’s top 600 and is currently sitting at his career-high of No. 186. And he’s set to rise even further after picking up his first tour-level win.
