Here are 10 results and talking points readers may have missed.
Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the Formula 1 world championship race with victory at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The Mercedes driver finished 13.078 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, with Max Verstappen third.
Lewis Hamilton came home fourth. With the season approaching its climax, Antonelli’s latest win could prove decisive.
Manchester City suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season, going down 2–1 to Aston Villa. Arsenal beat Everton 2–0, Tottenham defeated Chelsea by the same scoreline and Liverpool claimed a 2–0 home win over Brighton.
Manchester United endured another miserable afternoon, losing 3–0 at home to Bournemouth.
Meanwhile, in Spain, Kylian Mbappé scored twice as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2–1, including an 88th-minute winner.
The Stormers edged a 13-try thriller against Scarlets, winning 52–40 at home. The Bulls also delivered, beating Ulster 34–26 in Pretoria, while the Sharks secured a 36–21 away victory over Cardiff.
The Lions were the exception among the four South African sides, losing 31–10 to Edinburgh. It was an entertaining round for local rugby supporters, with three South African teams collecting victories.
Orlando Pirates secured their place in the CAF Champions League group stage, completing an emphatic aggregate victory over Namibia’s African Stars.
But it was a weekend to forget for two other South African heavyweights. Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns were eliminated by Angola’s Wiliete SC after a 1–1 draw in Pretoria, while Kaizer Chiefs lost 3–2 on penalties to Zambia’s Red Arrows after their tie ended 1–1 on aggregate.
More than 4,000 runners participated in the Diamonds and Dorings Kimberley Big Hole Marathon, with defending champions Bennet Seloyi and Kenya’s Fridah Ndinda retaining their marathon titles.
Northern Cape runner Arthur Jantjies finished second in the 10km run in 28:04, just two seconds behind winner Ryan Mphahlele. The organisers had previously targeted 5,000 participants, but the final entry and finisher figures remain unconfirmed.
The Springbok Women lost 40–27 to Ireland in the opening match of their WXV Global Series double-header at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. South Africa scored five tries, but Ireland crossed six times and led 21–17 at half-time.
The teams meet again on Saturday, October 31, when the hosts will look to address the defensive lapses that proved costly in the first encounter.
South African distance runner Glenrose Xaba won the women’s race at the inaugural Absa Run Your City Mangaung 10km in 32:10. She finished five seconds ahead of Kenya’s Jackline Rotich, with Lesotho’s Neheng Khatala third.
Kenya’s Filex Masai Kibet won the men’s race in 28:14. Xaba’s victory made her the first South African woman to win an Absa Run Your City Series race this year.
Boland and the Titans finished level on 137 in their Pro20 Cup clash, forcing a Super Over. The first decider also ended level, with both sides scoring nine runs.
In the second Super Over, the Titans managed only four runs before Boland reached seven without losing a wicket to secure a remarkable victory. It was a dramatic finish in a competition where every result matters as teams battle for Super 8 places.
The Northern Cape Heat were denied the chance to push for a result against North West Dragons after rain forced their Pro20 Cup match to end in a no-result.
The Heat had posted 180, built around an unbeaten 129-run fourth-wicket partnership between Blake Simpson, who scored 51 off 35 balls, and Jordan Neil, who made 74 off 41.
The Dragons were 22/3 in their chase of 181 when the weather intervened. The result ended the Dragons’ hopes of reaching the Super 8 stage.
