LES Grobler, the dad of veteran Stellenbosch FC striker Bradley Grobler, has passed away.
Stellies confirmed the sad news as Bradley mourns the man who helped shape his football journey from a young age.
The club sent condolences to Bradley and the Grobler family.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bradley Grobler and his family following the passing of his father, Les Grobler.
“A respected figure in South African football, Les enjoyed a distinguished career and leaves behind a lasting legacy. Our thoughts are with Bradley and his loved ones during this difficult time,” Stellenbosch said.
Les was a respected name in South African football and made his mark as a tough striker in the 1980s and early 1990s.
He was known for his strength, aerial power and ability to trouble defenders.
Les played for clubs including PG Rangers (later called Grinaker Rangers) and Moroka Swallows.
He helped Rangers win the National Soccer League title in 1986 and was among the club’s leading goalscorers during that campaign.
Les later joined Moroka Swallows, becoming part of a successful era for the Soweto giants.
He helped the Birds win cup honours in 1989 and scored in their 5-2 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the replayed final.
He was also part of the Swallows team that won the same competition again in 1991, beating Jomo Cosmos 2-1.
But Les was not only a player.
After hanging up his boots, he stayed close to the game through coaching and youth development.
He worked with clubs including Boksburg, Silver Stars and Highlands Park, where he helped guide young footballers.
His biggest football project was close to home.
Les was Bradley’s first coach and started working with him when he was just three years old.
He guided Bradley until he signed his first professional contract at 19.
Bradley went on to build a big career of his own, playing for clubs including Silver Stars, Platinum Stars, Ajax Cape Town, SuperSport United and Stellenbosch FC.
He also earned Bafana Bafana call-ups and became one of the Premier Soccer League’s proven goalscorers.
Bradley missed Stellenbosch’s Carling Knockout last-16 match against Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium following his dad’s death.
The veteran striker has scored more than 100 PSL goals in his career.
But this week, football takes a back seat as he mourns his dad, coach and mentor.
Les leaves behind a proud football legacy of goals, trophies, coaching and developing future talent.
