André Ayew Opens Up on GFA Presidency Calls, Defends Asamoah Gyan Over 2010 World Cup Penalty

Ghana captain André Ayew has spoken about calls encouraging him to consider the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidency, defended former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan over his penalty miss at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and outlined areas he believes require attention to improve football administration in Ghana.

Ayew made the remarks during an interview on the Obi One Podcast, hosted by former Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi. The discussion covered Ghanaian football, the responsibilities of players beyond the pitch and the challenges facing the country’s domestic game.

On the possibility of becoming GFA president, Ayew disclosed that he had received calls from people within football encouraging him to consider the position. However, he has not formally declared an intention to contest the presidency.

The experienced midfielder indicated that his immediate concern was the development of Ghanaian football rather than securing a leadership position. His comments come amid ongoing discussions about the future direction of the sport and the leadership needed to strengthen its administration.

Ayew’s experience with the Black Stars and at club level has given him an understanding of some of the challenges confronting footballers and administrators. His remarks suggested that any meaningful reform would require practical solutions and a commitment to improving the game rather than focusing solely on who occupies the top position.

The former Swansea City and Marseille player also came to the defence of Asamoah Gyan, who remains closely associated with Ghana’s dramatic elimination from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Gyan missed a penalty in the closing moments of extra time during Ghana’s quarter-final encounter with Uruguay. The match ended 1-1 before Uruguay won the subsequent penalty shootout, denying the Black Stars a place in the semi-finals.

The missed spot-kick became one of the most painful moments in Ghanaian football history, with Gyan facing intense scrutiny from supporters despite his broader contribution to the national team.

Ayew argued that Gyan should not be blamed for Ghana’s elimination. He highlighted the striker’s role in helping the Black Stars reach the quarter-finals, a historic achievement that made Ghana the third African nation to reach that stage of the men’s World Cup.

Gyan had scored important goals during the tournament, including a decisive extra-time winner against the United States in the round of 16. Ayew’s defence of his former teammate underscored the importance of considering a player’s overall contribution rather than judging an entire career by one missed opportunity.

The interview also addressed the importance of financial education for young footballers. Ayew called for greater support to help emerging players understand how to manage their earnings and make informed decisions about their careers.

He emphasised the value of financial experts and experienced former players in guiding young professionals, particularly as they navigate contracts, investments and relationships with advisers. Footballers can earn substantial incomes during relatively short careers, making financial planning an important part of their long-term security.

Ayew also drew attention to the need for practical measures to improve domestic football, referring to his experience as a club chief executive. His comments added to the wider debate about the structures, resources and management practices required to make Ghanaian football more competitive and sustainable.

The interview offered insight into Ayew’s views on leadership, player welfare and the treatment of former national team stars. While speculation continues about whether he could eventually pursue a leadership role at the GFA, his immediate message focused on addressing the challenges facing the sport and recognising the contributions of those who have represented Ghana.
