From Diski Challenge Setback to Regional Setback

Makhanya faced a demotion to the Pirates’ development team, Pele Pele, after being relieved of his duties as DDC head coach prior to the last season.

Roscoe Krieling took over the coaching role and made an impressive impact. Under his leadership, the Buccaneers clinched their first-ever Reserve League title, achieving a remarkable 75 points—a new benchmark surpassing the previous record of 70 points held by rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

The victory was a significant blow to Makhanya’s coaching reputation. Throughout his tenure, Pirates frequently launched strong title bids but suffered late-season downturns around Round 25. These consistent drop-offs prompted serious questions about Makhanya’s tactical awareness and focus during critical title races.

Fostering Soweto’s Premier Export Talent

Despite the challenges in DDC, Makhanya’s legacy as a talent developer remains strong. He significantly contributed to the growth of several players who made major international transfers:

• Relebohile Mofokeng: He was developed under Makhanya before signing with Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise after a treble-winning season with the Pirates.
• Mbekezeli Mbokazi: He graduated and honed his skills in Makhanya’s DDC squad prior to making a lucrative transfer to MLS team Chicago Fire in January.
• Mohau Nkota: Another academy product mentored by Makhanya who earned a transfer to Saudi Pro League team Al-Ettifaq.

Makhanya’s ties with the Soweto Giants extend beyond two decades. He debuted in the senior squad during the 2000/01 season and spent 11 years as a player for the Pirates, clinching three league titles.

Changes in the Technical Team at Mayfair

Makhanya’s exit signifies the second notable departure from Mayfair in recent times, as Pirates also released assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi the previous week.

Ncikazi was let go following reported tensions with head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and has since rejoined Golden Arrows.
