THE VODACOM Bulls, Hollywoodbets Sharks, and DHL Stormers showed their fighting spirit in round four of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC), securing crucial bonus-point victories to remain among the leading teams on the standings.
The 10bet Lions, however, endured a difficult outing in Scotland, where a disappointing second-half performance saw them suffer a 31-10 defeat against unbeaten log leaders Edinburgh and slip out of the top eight.
The Sharks kicked off the weekend’s action with a 36-21 victory over Cardiff in Wales on Friday night, before the Bulls and Stormers kept the South African flag flying with hard-fought home wins on Saturday.
The Bulls held off a determined Ulster challenge to claim a 34-26 victory at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, while the Stormers survived a dramatic second-half fightback from Scarlets to win 52-40 at DHL Stadium in Cape Town.
Following the fourth round, the Bulls occupy third place with 16 points, behind Edinburgh on 19 and Glasgow on 18. The Stormers are fourth, also on 16 points, while the Sharks sit fifth with 15 points.
The Lions have slipped to 11th place on nine points, with 14 rounds of pool matches still to play.
The Hollywoodbets Sharks continued their encouraging start to the campaign with a six-try performance against Cardiff Arms Park, securing a vital 36-21 victory on Friday night.
The Durban side made an early statement when Ethan Hooker crossed for the opening try in the third minute after collecting a pop pass close to the tryline.
Cardiff responded with a well-worked try to take a 7-5 lead, but the Sharks regained control through Matt Romao, who exploited a gap in the defence, and Jason Jenkins, who powered over from close range.
Those scores gave the visitors a 17-7 advantage at half-time.
Cardiff emerged with renewed determination after the break, with James Botham scoring twice during a strong spell to put the Welsh side back in front.
The Sharks, however, finished strongly. Thomas du Toit and Ethan Bester crossed before Romao completed his brace, ensuring the visitors secured the bonus point and an important away victory.

The 10bet Lions could not maintain their challenge against Edinburgh, suffering a 31-10 defeat in difficult, rain-soaked conditions at the Hive Stadium.
The Johannesburg side was still dealing with the loss of teammate Hyron Andrews the previous week but managed to remain in contention during the opening half against the only team to have won all four of its matches this season.
Edinburgh went into the break with a narrow two-point advantage after finishing off a well-constructed attacking move. The Lions managed only a penalty by Chris Smith during the first half.
The contest changed dramatically after the restart, as Edinburgh's powerful forward play and ability to exploit space exposed weaknesses in the Lions' defensive organisation.
The Scottish hosts added four tries in the second half, while Batho Hlekani scored the Lions' only try of the match.
The result left the Lions with work to do as they slipped to 11th in the standings.

The Vodacom Bulls displayed resilience under pressure to overcome Ulster 34-26 in an entertaining encounter at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
The Pretoria side appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory after establishing a 21-7 half-time lead, but Ulster mounted a determined second-half comeback that threatened to spoil the hosts' afternoon.
The Bulls made a powerful start, with Marcell Coetzee opening the scoring from a rolling maul before Elrigh Louw finished off another strong forward drive to extend the lead to 14-0.
Coetzee then crossed for his second try from a pick-and-go as the Bulls' dominant scrum helped them take control. Ulster managed a late first-half try to reduce the deficit to 21-7 at the break.
The visitors returned with greater intensity and scored early in the second half. The Bulls were also reduced to 14 players when Coetzee received a yellow card for a high tackle.
A penalty by Handre Pollard provided some breathing room, but Ulster continued to threaten, and another try brought the score to 24-19.
Johan Grobbelaar then broke through two defenders to score the Bulls' fourth try and secure their bonus point. Ulster refused to surrender, however, and added another try in the 69th minute to close the gap to 31-26.
With the match hanging in the balance, the Bulls held their nerve. Curwin Bosch landed a penalty on the full-time hooter to seal a hard-earned eight-point victory.

The DHL Stormers produced a thrilling attacking display to overcome Scarlets 52-40 at DHL Stadium, with two late tries by Junior Springbok flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed settling a match that threatened to slip away from the hosts.
The Cape side led 33-14 at half-time after capitalising on their strong scrum and attacking opportunities, but the Welsh visitors launched an impressive comeback in the second half.
Scarlets scored four tries in just over 20 minutes to draw level at 40-40 by the 65th minute, putting the Stormers under immense pressure.
The match had begun positively for the hosts after Scarlets received a yellow card in the 11th minute. Zachary Porthen crossed following a well-executed move around the maul before Haashim Pead finished another attacking opportunity to give the Stormers a 12-0 lead.
Scarlets responded with a try of their own, but Ntuthuko Mchunu restored the hosts' momentum with a powerful finish from the back of a lineout.
The visitors continued to threaten with their pace, only for Seabelo Senatla to score out wide and secure the Stormers' bonus point. Deon Fourie added another try on the stroke of half-time to give the home side a commanding 19-point cushion.
The second half was a different story, as Scarlets repeatedly breached the Stormers' defensive line and capitalised on missed tackles. Joe Roberts scored twice during the comeback to complete his hat-trick, helping the Welsh side pull level.
The Stormers responded through Junior Bok prop Oliver Reid, but it was Ahmed who delivered the decisive blows, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to restore the hosts' lead and secure their third victory in four URC matches.
The Stormers finished with eight tries to Scarlets' six, earning a valuable bonus-point win and maintaining their position among the competition's leading sides.

For the Lions, the defeat in Scotland was a setback as they look to climb the standings, while Edinburgh continued their unbeaten run at the top.
With 14 rounds of pool matches remaining, the South African teams still have plenty of opportunities to strengthen their positions ahead of the race for the play-offs.
