Chiefs Head to Durban for vital CAF Confed Cup Match: A Return to the Happy Hunting Ground

The administration of Moses Mabhida Stadium has confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs will take on Zambia’s Red Arrows in Durban for the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round clash.

After a 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, Amakhosi will make their way to Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa Stadium for the first leg on Saturday before returning to South Africa to settle the aggregate score in KwaZulu-Natal.

An aggregate victory over Red Arrows will grant Chiefs a place in the group stages of Africa’s secondary club tournament. Amakhosi received a first-round bye due to their impressive continental ranking after reaching the group stage last season, narrowly missing the quarterfinals following a loss in the final round.

Why is Kaizer Chiefs Competing Against Red Arrows in Durban?

Moses Mabhida Stadium serves as Kaizer Chiefs’ official secondary venue, attracting large crowds from Durban and the greater KwaZulu-Natal region.

The stadium has a rich history with the Naturena team. Amakhosi ended their lengthy title drought at this venue, triumphing over Orlando Pirates in the 2024/25 Nedbank Cup final; it also hosted Chiefs’ 2014/15 MTN8 win against the same Soweto rivals.

The pitch at the Durban venue has recently undergone significant renovations by the eThekwini Municipality. It reopened earlier this month for domestic matches by hosting the MTN8 final, where Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Orlando Pirates on Saturday—marking the 11th MTN8 final held at Moses Mabhida Stadium since the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

What is Kaizer Chiefs’ Continental History?

Kaizer Chiefs holds a distinctive place in South African football history as the only club in the country to have claimed this competition in its earlier format. Amakhosi were crowned champions of the 2001 African Cup Winners’ Cup (formerly the Mandela Cup) under the guidance of former coach Muhsin Ertugral, overcoming Angola’s Interclube in the final.

With strong local support expected in Durban, Fernando Da Cruz’s squad is keen to leverage their home-away-from-home advantage to make their way back into the group stages of continental competition.
