From ‘Clumsy’ Teen to Courtois-Like Star: The Journey of Chelsea Keeper Mike Penders

MIKE PENDERS has a significant challenge ahead at Chelsea — fortunately, the young goalkeeper has the skills to match.

The 21-year-old Penders is stepping in to replace World Cup champion Emi Martinez after the Blues’ primary keeper suffered a concussion and a fractured jaw last weekend.

Joining Penders is reminiscent of the journey of fellow Belgian Thibaut Courtois, who trained at the same club, Genk, before cementing his legacy at Stamford Bridge.

Koen Witters, who has coached both players and currently manages Genk’s goalkeeping academy, recalled how Penders’ physical characteristics presented him with challenges in more than one aspect.

Witters mentioned: “When Mike was only 14, he wore a shoe size of 49 (equivalent to a UK 14).

“During winter, when the ground was a bit frozen, I distinctly remember saying, ‘Mike, those boots aren’t suitable for you.’

“He replied, ‘Coach, they don’t manufacture the right boots in my size.’”

Penders first caught Witters’ eye during regular sessions at his private goalkeeping academy while he was still playing for youth teams.

The young goalkeeper not only showcased his talent but also his impressive height, surpassing some boys in training who were two years his senior.

However, this early growth spurt presented challenges that almost cost Penders during trials for Genk’s under-14 team when Witters was coaching there.

Witters explained: “He was extremely tall, but his timing, coordination, and motor skills weren’t synchronized.

“He faced challenges with all basic actions, whether kicking, walking, running, or quick movements.

“At times, when he ran backward, he would stumble. We noticed immense potential, yet recognized a lot of development was necessary.

“Throughout the trial phase, he demonstrated a resilient mentality. He was eager to learn and very motivated, which is why we decided to give him a shot.”

Penders is the same height as Courtois, standing at 6ft 6½in, and his past struggles mirror those of his predecessor.

Witters noted: “Courtois was also a tall, somewhat clumsy young man. He faced his own difficulties at the under-14 level.

“However, my colleague, Gilbert Roux, strongly believed in his potential and insisted we continued developing his skills. Once he found his rhythm, he accelerated quickly.”

Penders followed a similar trajectory, surpassing the other goalkeeper in his age group at Genk.
Witters remarked: “By the time he reached under-17, it was evident he was destined to become the next major talent at our club.”

Chelsea completed a £17 million deal for Penders in August 2024, shortly after his 19th birthday, despite him having only made two appearances for Genk’s first team.

His impressive performance the previous season with Jong Genk, the club’s youth team playing in Belgium’s second division, convinced Chelsea to bring him on board.

Mirroring the success of Courtois and every goalkeeper who has risen through Genk over the past two decades, Penders is proficient with his feet.

Witters, who now oversees a department staffed by ten specialized coaches and additional support, explained: “Today, every team’s goal is to have a goalkeeper with adept footwork.

“However, we emphasized this approach two decades ago, thanks to Gilbert Roux and Guy Martens, who laid the groundwork long before my time.

“Our goalkeepers must be proficient with both feet. We start their training on that, as well as in spatial awareness and decision-making, from a young age, around ten.

“While you can always improve, Mike’s skill set is very comprehensive.”

Courtois and Penders are just two among more than a dozen keepers produced by Genk’s goalkeeping program, currently playing in Belgium and elsewhere.

Last month, Liverpool agreed to pay up to £30 million for their latest gem, 18-year-old Lucca Brughmans.

Penders enjoyed a commendable 2025-6 season on loan at Chelsea’s sister club, Strasbourg, and earned a place on Belgium’s World Cup squad as third choice.

With mistakes from Blues keeper Robert Sanchez this season, the door opened for Penders — only for Chelsea to subsequently secure Martinez from Aston Villa.

Following Martinez’s injury from a hard hit with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, the Belgian is poised to make his first Premier League start against Tottenham today.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso expresses confidence, stating: “He’s prepared. He has demonstrated a strong level. When he came on, he exhibited his capabilities.

“Mike is not just a keeper for now, but also for the future.”

Witters concurs, asserting: “He possesses the mental fortitude to handle the pressure. I’m convinced he will become Chelsea’s No .1.

Blues supporters witnessed Courtois’ contributions to two Premier League titles before he moved on to even grander achievements with Real Madrid.

Could Penders reach the same heights as Courtois? Alonso remarked: “There are numerous similarities, not just in nationality, but in stature as well.

“I had a conversation with Thibaut at the World Cup, and he noted some similarities he perceives in Mike.”
