Rassie Erasmus eyes up England international for Springbok switch

Switch.

Rassie Erasmus could soon have another option to consider as he assesses his second-row resources ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

The Springboks boss has previously identified England international Dave Ribbans among the players on his radar, with a potential change of allegiance becoming possible later this month.

Toulon lock Ribbans will complete his three-year international stand-down period on October 27, having last represented England against Argentina at the 2023 World Cup.

The 31-year-old earned 11 England caps but was born in Somerset West, giving him the birthright connection needed for a South African switch, subject to World Rugby approval.

“We are also looking at someone like David Ribbans, not that they must get their hopes up,” Erasmus said in January.

However, Ribbans has previously expressed reservations about representing two countries.

“You never say never with these things and South Africa was my home originally, but England has become my second home, and I was super proud to play for them,” he told The Telegraph in April 2025.

“I find it a bit strange when players play for two countries.”

“This is no slight on the Springboks, who are an amazing team. It’s just my view, and I’m a bit stubborn in it. I’d put aside the potential glory for that because it wouldn’t be right towards England.”

The door to a Springbok switch could therefore open later this month, but whether Ribbans chooses to walk through it remains to be seen with the Nations Championship just around the corner.
