DONE AND DUSTED: Joseph Makhanya confirms his next destination after leaving Orlando Pirates

Joseph Makhanya Speaks Out After Leaving Orlando Pirates: What Lies Ahead for the Club Icon?

Joseph “Duku Duku” Makhanya, a former development coach for Orlando Pirates, has garnered attention once again following his exit from Pele Pele FC, the club's feeder team. This has led many to wonder about his future in South African football.

Makhanya, who has gained respect within the Buccaneers’ development program, was reassigned to Pele Pele FC in September 2025 after previously guiding the club’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team. His transition to the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League team was seen as a chance to continue fostering young talent while aiding the team's promotion ambitions to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

However, his tenure with the feeder team has recently come to a close, marking the end of another phase of his coaching career.

As a former Pirates midfielder, Makhanya built a solid reputation for scouting and developing young players during his time with the club’s reserve team. His efforts have contributed to the success of various players, including Relebohile Mofokeng, Mohau Nkota, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who have since attracted attention at the senior level.

His commitment to youth development is an integral part of his legacy at the Soweto club.

Recent reports have suggested that Makhanya is now discussing his future following his departure from Pele Pele FC. Fans are keen to know whether he aims to continue coaching, take on another development role, or explore new opportunities in football.

Makhanya is reportedly still engaged in football conversations, particularly those concerning the nurturing of young talent. In October 2026, he commented on Pirates midfielder Simphiwe Masilela, noting the youngster's versatility that was apparent during his formative years.

Masilela's rise underscores the importance of Makhanya's previous work within the club's development system. The former coach has consistently highlighted the need to prepare young players for senior football rather than merely focusing on youth-team outcomes.

During his tenure with the DDC side, Makhanya laid the groundwork for players who eventually made it to the first team. His role was especially crucial in a competitive landscape where clubs increasingly rely on academy graduates to enhance their squads.

Makhanya wasn't the only former Pirates member to leave Pele Pele FC; his assistant, former Buccaneers midfielder Issa Sarr, also departed. The reasons behind their exits remain unclear.

Orlando Pirates have since initiated changes in their coaching setup, with Vincent “Pep” Rammoni stepping in to lead the ABC Motsepe League team for the 2026/27 season, replacing Makhanya.

The pressing question now is what Makhanya's next steps will be. His background as both a former professional player and a youth coach could make him a valuable asset for clubs aiming to bolster their development programs.

Though his departure from Pirates closes an important chapter, his impact on nurturing young South African football talent is a key part of his coaching narrative.

Supporters will be eagerly awaiting updates on his next professional endeavor. Until a new role or official statement is provided, it would be premature to speculate on his future position.

Makhanya’s journey highlights that success in football is not solely defined by trophies; for a development coach, equipping young athletes for excellence at the highest levels can be just as meaningful.
