Pitso Uses Orlando Pirates, Arsenal and Barcelona to Explain His Point About Benni

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has played down suggestions that Kenya coach Benni McCarthy could have a tactical advantage over South Africa ahead of their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches.

McCarthy’s deep understanding of South African football and his familiarity with several Bafana Bafana players have raised questions about whether he could use that knowledge to help Kenya secure positive results.

South Africa are preparing for two important Group D encounters against Kenya. The first match is scheduled to take place at Orlando Stadium next week, before the two nations meet again in Kenya on November 17.

Bafana currently sit at the top of their qualifying group and will be determined to strengthen their position as they pursue a third consecutive AFCON appearance, having featured in the 2023 and 2025 tournaments. Kenya have already qualified automatically as co-hosts but will still be keen to challenge South Africa.

Speaking after announcing his squad, Mosimane explained that modern football has made it difficult for coaches to gain a significant advantage simply through knowing their opponents.

He pointed out that advanced video analysis and scouting systems allow technical teams to study almost every detail about rival teams.

Using Barcelona, Arsenal and Bayern Munich as examples, Mosimane noted that despite their playing styles being widely understood, they remain difficult opponents to beat.

He added that knowing McCarthy's preferred tactics does not guarantee success, as coaches can always introduce unexpected changes.

Mosimane is therefore focused on preparing Bafana properly and ensuring they maintain their position at the top of Group D.
