Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shared his views on the CAF Champions League format, insisting that clubs must respect the rules governing the competition, even when they differ from those used in Europe.
Masandawana won the continental title last season but must still compete in the preliminary rounds as they attempt to defend their crown. Angolan side Williete SC stand between the South African champions and a place in the group stages, making the upcoming encounter important for Cardoso and his players.
The format differs from the UEFA Champions League, where the reigning champions do not have to go through the qualifying rounds. This has raised questions about why African champions must still negotiate the preliminary stages despite winning the competition in the previous season.
However, Cardoso believes teams should focus on understanding the existing regulations and preparing to compete rather than questioning the format.
The Portuguese tactician referred to Spanish coach Juanma Lillo, who previously worked as an assistant to Pep Guardiola. Cardoso explained that Lillo had taught him an important lesson about accepting the rules under which football is played.
Cardoso said he did not have a particular opinion about defending champions participating in the preliminary rounds, pointing out that the regulations were already in place. He stressed that clubs must respect the rules and do their best to achieve their objectives.
The Sundowns coach also used South African football as an example, highlighting the differences between the MTN8, Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup. He explained that each competition has its own format, with different methods of selecting participating teams and determining match-ups.
Sundowns will now concentrate on overcoming Williete SC and securing their place in the CAF Champions League group stages. The club hopes to build on last season's success and compete for another continental title.
Meanwhile, former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu has appeared on a billboard in India as the face of Tornado, a company that sponsors the Super League Kerala.
The South African footballer’s appearance on the billboard highlights his growing profile beyond the local game. Zungu, who has played for several clubs during his career, continues to attract attention from football supporters. Tornado’s association with the Kerala-based competition provides another platform for the midfielder to expand his presence in the international football market.
Zungu's appearance on the billboard also highlights the opportunities available to South African footballers to build their profiles beyond the country's borders. His association with Tornado connects his name to a football competition in India, giving him further visibility in an international market.
