Ronwen Williams Reportedly Buys R10 Million House in Sandton

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has explained his position on the CAF Champions League format, which requires the defending champions to compete in the preliminary rounds before reaching the group stages.

Masandawana won the continental competition last season but have still had to negotiate the qualifying stages as they attempt to defend their title. Angolan side Williete SC stand between the Tshwane giants and a place in the group stages, making the upcoming encounter an important test for Cardoso and his players.

The format differs from the UEFA Champions League, where the reigning champions do not have to compete in the qualifying rounds. This has raised questions about the demands placed on African champions, particularly those who have already proved themselves by winning the competition.

However, Cardoso believes clubs should accept the regulations and focus on competing rather than questioning how the tournament is organised. The Portuguese tactician referred to a lesson he learned from Spanish coach Juanma Lillo, who has worked with Pep Guardiola and coached in several countries.

Cardoso explained that Lillo often emphasised that football must be played according to the rules that are in place. He said understanding those rules makes it easier for teams to prepare and compete.

The Sundowns coach also pointed to South African football, where domestic cup competitions operate under different formats. He mentioned the MTN8, which features eight teams, the Carling Knockout, which uses a different draw format, and the Nedbank Cup, where teams can be drawn against one another.

According to Cardoso, each competition has its own regulations, and teams must adapt to the requirements. He made it clear that Sundowns would concentrate on doing their best as they attempt to secure qualification for the CAF Champions League group stages.

The Brazilians are hoping to build on last season's continental success and become champions again. Progressing beyond Williete SC would be an important step towards achieving that objective.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has reportedly purchased a house worth R10 million in Sandton.

Williams recently shared a picture of the property on Instagram, accompanied by a caption expressing gratitude to Sundowns for the role the club has played in his journey. “Thanks for making who I am Sundowns 🙏🏽❤️👆🏻,” he wrote. The post highlights the goalkeeper’s appreciation for the Tshwane giants, although the reported value and purchase of the property have not been independently confirmed.

Williams has established himself as an important figure for Sundowns and South African football. His message showed appreciation for the club as Cardoso and his players continue their preparations for the next stage of their continental campaign.
