END OF THE ROAD: Top Coach Explains Why King Ndlovu Can No Longer Play Football At 33

Why Gomora United Coach Patrick Phungwayo Urged King Ndlovu to Retire From Playing

Gomora United head coach Patrick Phungwayo has explained why he advised experienced goalkeeper King Ndlovu to consider retiring from professional football and concentrating on developing the club’s young goalkeepers.

Ndlovu joined the Motsepe Foundation Championship side at the beginning of the 2026/27 season in a dual role as a player and goalkeeper coach. However, after assessing the experience and leadership qualities he brings to the team, Phungwayo believes the veteran shot-stopper can make an even greater contribution from the technical area.

Speaking to FARPost, Phungwayo explained that his recommendation was not a criticism of Ndlovu’s ability but rather an acknowledgement of the importance of preparing experienced footballers for life beyond their playing careers.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has enjoyed a lengthy journey in South African football, having represented several clubs, including Marumo Gallants and Black Leopards. He had been without a club since parting ways with Pretoria Callies in 2025 before securing his move to Gomora United.

Ndlovu also became a familiar face to South African football supporters after gaining national attention as a ball boy during the memorable 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by the country.

According to Phungwayo, the goalkeeper’s presence at Gomora United provides an opportunity for younger players to learn directly from someone who understands the demands of professional football.

The coach revealed that he encouraged Ndlovu to recognise the influence he already has on the club’s emerging goalkeepers and use his experience to help them improve.

Phungwayo believes the respect Ndlovu commands within the squad makes him an ideal figure to guide the goalkeeping department. He also expressed confidence that the club can rely on its goalkeepers to deliver when called upon.

The Gomora United coach emphasised that retirement should not necessarily mean walking away from football. Instead, it can open the door to another meaningful chapter in the game through coaching, mentorship and player development.

Ndlovu is already making a positive contribution in his new responsibilities, with Phungwayo praising the work being done by the club’s goalkeepers.

The coach has also highlighted the value of having former players involved in the technical team, pointing to striker coach Mxolisi Macuphu, who retired at the end of the previous season.

Macuphu’s experience in attack, combined with Phungwayo’s defensive background and Ndlovu’s goalkeeping knowledge, gives Gomora United a technical team with experience across different areas of the pitch.

Phungwayo believes this combination will help the club grow as the season progresses.

His message to Ndlovu reflects a broader reality in professional football: even experienced players eventually need to consider their next step.

For Gomora United, the priority is to turn that experience into an advantage, develop younger talent and build a stronger team capable of competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
