Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has reportedly taken charge of a training session at the club's Kloorkop base while head coach Miguel Cardoso was absent. The reports come at an uncertain time for the club, following the team's early exit from the CAF Champions League.
According to unconfirmed reports, Komphela led the session as Sundowns prepared for their upcoming Carling Knockout Cup match against Marumo Gallants. The development has set off talk among supporters about Cardoso's future, especially after a disappointing run in Africa. It has not been officially confirmed that the Portuguese coach has been suspended, dismissed or removed from his duties.
Some reports also claim that Sundowns management held an emergency meeting with Cardoso to talk about the team's performances and the way forward after the Champions League elimination. That meeting has not been confirmed either.
The timing is important for the Tshwane giants, who are now expected to turn their attention to the domestic competitions and try to regain momentum. Sundowns have built a name for competing for major trophies both at home and on the continent, so an early exit from the Champions League has led many to ask questions about the team's form and the plans for the rest of the season.
Komphela has plenty of coaching experience in South African football, and he could help keep things steady as the team prepares for its next game. Still, the fact that he reportedly led training does not by itself mean that a permanent change in the technical team is being planned.
For now, the reason for Cardoso's absence and the details of the reported meeting remain unclear. Supporters will be waiting for an official update from the club as Sundowns get ready to face Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Cup.
