Mofokeng Makes Mzansi Proud in Europe as Mngqithi Faces Shock Exit and Mokwena Continues Winning Run
South African football stars experienced contrasting fortunes abroad over the weekend, with Relebohile Mofokeng delivering an outstanding performance in Belgium, Manqoba Mngqithi facing a disappointing departure from Young Africans SC, and Rulani Mokwena continuing his impressive progress in Egypt.
Mofokeng, formerly of Orlando Pirates, stole the spotlight as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise came from two goals behind to secure a remarkable 5-2 victory over Cercle Brugge in the Belgian Pro League on Sunday. The talented attacker scored in the 80th minute before providing an assist for his team's fifth goal late in the match.
His contribution demonstrated his growing influence in European football and highlighted the quality that has made him one of South Africa's most exciting young talents. Mofokeng has reportedly recorded five goals and three assists in 14 appearances across all competitions this season, strengthening his position as an important player for the Belgian outfit.
Meanwhile, South African internationals Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Lyle Foster faced each other in Major League Soccer, where Minnesota United and Houston Dynamo played out a goalless draw. Hlongwane completed the match, while Foster was substituted in the second half.
However, the biggest disappointment came with reports that Mngqithi had been dismissed by Tanzanian giants Young Africans following a 0-0 draw against TRA United. The result left the club five points behind league leaders Simba SC.
Despite guiding Young Africans into the CAF Champions League group stages and winning the Tanzanian Community Shield, Mngqithi reportedly paid the price for inconsistent domestic results. He recorded 10 wins, two draws and one defeat in 13 matches, according to reports.
In contrast, Mokwena continued his winning run with Pyramids FC, guiding the Egyptian side into the CAF Champions League group stages after a commanding 5-0 aggregate victory over El Merriekh Bentiu.
While Mngqithi faces uncertainty, Mofokeng and Mokwena continue to raise South Africa's profile internationally.
