South African football administrator Irvin Khoza has expressed optimism about the possibility of defender Mbokazi joining Bafana Bafana, suggesting that his inclusion could give head coach Pitso Mosimane more options when selecting his defensive lineup.
Khoza believes the national team already possesses several talented defenders and that bringing Mbokazi into the squad would increase competition for places. He views the situation as an advantage for Mosimane, who would have a wider selection of quality players to consider when making important decisions.
“I think it will give coach Pitso a good problem, that he has many high-quality defenders, which now will include Mbokazi,” Khoza said.
His remarks highlight the importance of having sufficient depth in the national team, particularly in defence, where consistency and coordination are essential. When multiple players demonstrate the ability to perform at a high level, selecting the starting lineup can become challenging. However, such competition can also help improve the team's overall performance.
Mbokazi's potential inclusion would provide Mosimane with another option as he evaluates different defensive partnerships. Nevertheless, the defender would need to demonstrate his ability and meet the coach's expectations before earning a regular place in the team. His performances in training and competitive matches could play an important role in determining his position within the squad.
Increased competition could also motivate other defenders to improve their performances. Players who understand that their positions are not guaranteed may work harder to maintain their standards and impress the coaching staff.
Furthermore, having several dependable defenders could prove beneficial during a busy international schedule. Injuries, suspensions and changes in form can force coaches to adjust their lineups, making squad depth an important factor in maintaining stability.
