In response to a contentious social media post criticizing Amakhosi, TS Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi has responded via WhatsApp to a message from Jessica Motaung, the marketing director of Kaizer Chiefs. Featuring the club's emblem on the back of a donkey, the post went viral on social media after depicting Kaizer Chiefs as a donkey. After Thursday's Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 draw, the picture went viral, and fans had a range of feelings about it.
Sukazi said to Andile Ncube on Sports Nite Amplified that his hectic schedule meant he was unaware of the post until much later. Although he did not disclose Motaung's specific inquiries, he did say that she had contacted him via WhatsApp to discuss the image.
"I realized this only now," Sukazi remarked. Despite our hectic schedule at the legal office, I noticed that Jessica Motaung sent me a WhatsApp message about the post that had three question marks. But the eye of the beholder is the ultimate judge. The image, according to Sukazi, could have multiple meanings depending on the viewer. Others thought the picture was offensive to one of the most prominent football clubs in South Africa, while others saw it as lighthearted football banter.
Prior to their Carling Knockout Cup match, the two teams may have been aggravated by the post, which the TS Galaxy chairman admitted. But he insisted that teasing on social media was actually a part of football style. Perhaps we have created an adversary in the run-up to the cup match, but he added that it was just friendly banter. According to Sukazi, he occasionally gives the younger members of the club's social media team more leeway to be creative when they're making content. But he did say that upon viewing the image, he contacted the team to talk about it.
Even though he got the point of the post, he still thought another strategy would have worked better. If you ask Sukazi, it would have been more fitting to use a lion rather than a donkey. Occasionally, you have to give kids a pass when it comes to being creative on social media. But after seeing that, he said, he summoned them in to provide an explanation. There is a boundary inside. Instead of the other animal, I would have liked to see the logo on top of the lion's head.
His remarks are made in the midst of the long-running rivalry between the top football clubs in South Africa, with more and more teams and supporters using social media to taunt each other. Nonetheless, this episode exemplifies how offensive images used by football clubs can cause controversy in football-related content.
Also, Kaizer Chiefs' marketing director Jessica Motaung has provided an explanation for the club's transfer woes, highlighting their inability to compete with Mamelodi Sundowns. Motaung said that Sundowns are able to pay higher transfer fees, bonuses, and contract extensions because their yearly revenue is reportedly R300 million. She mentioned that the Chiefs have a tight budget policy when it comes to signing players, with each transfer costing no more than R7 million. The club's dedication to fiscal responsibility is evident in this approach.
In contrasting the two teams' approaches to player acquisition, the disparity in club budgets has frequently come up. Although Sundowns are known to spend a lot of money on players, Chiefs have stressed the need of staying within their budget. For Sukazi and TS Galaxy, the immediate issue remains the reaction to the social media post and how the club manages its online communication ahead of the cup fixture. He seems to be saying that he can tolerate some lightheartedness in football as long as it doesn't go too far.
