Ouaddou Reveals How He Plans to Help Orlando Pirates Handle Champions League Pressure
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has outlined his strategy for preparing his young squad for the demanding challenges of the CAF Champions League group stage, emphasising the importance of mental strength as the Buccaneers prepare to compete against Africa's best teams.
The Soweto giants have secured their place in the group stage of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League after producing an impressive performance against Namibian side African Stars FC in the qualifying rounds. However, Ouaddou understands that the real test will begin when Pirates face more experienced continental opponents.
The Buccaneers completed a convincing 5-0 aggregate victory over African Stars, following a 1-0 win in the first leg and a commanding performance in the return fixture. Their qualification has raised expectations among supporters who want to see the club challenge for continental honours.
Despite the team's progress, Ouaddou believes his players must develop the mental resilience required to perform consistently under pressure. The coach recognises that his squad's relative youth and the arrival of several new players present challenges that extend beyond tactical preparation.
Playing for a club of Pirates' stature comes with enormous expectations, and some players are still learning how to manage the emotional demands associated with representing one of South Africa's biggest football institutions.
Ouaddou believes his responsibility is to help his players improve their confidence, remain composed during difficult moments and make better decisions when the stakes are high. He has also highlighted the potential benefits of professional psychological assistance, suggesting that a specialist could help players develop the mental tools needed for demanding continental encounters.
Pirates will enter the group stage with ambitions of progressing as far as possible, but Ouaddou recognises that youthful energy must be balanced with experience. The Buccaneers have a proud history in the competition, having lifted the CAF Champions League trophy in 1995. They also reached the semi-finals during the 2024/25 campaign under former coach Jose Riveiro.
However, the club suffered disappointment last season after being eliminated by FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo during the preliminary rounds. This time, Ouaddou wants his players to learn from previous setbacks and approach every match with greater maturity.
The coach will also need to manage his squad carefully as Pirates prepare to face different opponents, potentially in challenging away environments where hostile crowds and intense match situations can influence performances.
With the group-stage draw scheduled for Cairo on Wednesday, October 28, Pirates will soon discover the opponents standing between them and a successful continental campaign.
For Ouaddou, developing mental toughness, building confidence and helping younger players adapt to the demands of African football could prove decisive as the Buccaneers pursue their ambition of returning to the summit of continental football.
