Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi has praised his players for their disciplined defensive display after the Angolan club eliminated Mamelodi Sundowns from the CAF Champions League, securing a historic place in the group stage for the first time in the club’s history.
Wiliete held Sundowns to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night, progressing on the away-goals rule after the first leg in Lubango ended goalless. The result stunned the South African side, who had entered the tie as favourites to advance.
Sundowns made an early breakthrough when Tashreeq Matthews scored in the 11th minute, putting the hosts in a promising position. However, Wiliete responded after the interval, with Cristóvão “Mabululu” Paciência taking advantage of a defensive error by Cassius Mailula to level the score in the 48th minute.
Despite enjoying greater possession and recording 18 shots compared with Wiliete’s six, Sundowns struggled to find another goal. The visitors remained compact and organised defensively, absorbing pressure and protecting their advantage until the final whistle.
Bianchi praised his players for their commitment and discipline, saying they understood the importance of carrying out their defensive responsibilities against an experienced opponent. He was particularly pleased with their ability to remain focused under sustained pressure while making the most of their opportunity in front of goal.
The coach also highlighted the importance of eliminating Sundowns away from home, describing the achievement as a significant milestone for Wiliete and the club’s ambitions this season.
For Sundowns, the defeat raises fresh questions after the club’s earliest CAF Champions League elimination in 11 years. Chairman Tlhopie Motsepe has reportedly expressed disappointment, with coach Miguel Cardoso expected to pursue success in the remaining competitions, including the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the CAF Super Cup.
While Sundowns must now turn their attention to other targets, Wiliete will celebrate a landmark achievement. Their disciplined performance and crucial away goal secured a historic qualification and ended Sundowns’ continental campaign before the group stage.
