Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns face important tests in the Carling Knockout Cup as both clubs look to recover from disappointing exits from continental competitions.

Chiefs begin their campaign against TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, with pressure mounting on coach Fernando Da Cruz following the team’s recent struggles.

Amakhosi were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup by Zambia’s Red Arrows, losing on penalties despite securing a 1-0 victory in the second leg. Another disappointing result against Galaxy could intensify scrutiny of Da Cruz ahead of the upcoming Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.

Meanwhile, Sundowns host Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld as they attempt to respond to their unexpected Champions League elimination.

The defending Carling Knockout champions were knocked out by Angola’s Wiliete SC after a 1-1 draw in Pretoria left the tie level on aggregate, with the Angolan side advancing on away goals.

Coach Miguel Cardoso described the setback as a dark moment and expressed confidence that his team would recover. Tuesday’s encounter offers Sundowns an opportunity to demonstrate that determination.

Orlando Pirates enter their cup fixture in a more positive mood after defeating Namibia’s African Stars 5-0 on aggregate to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

With all three clubs pursuing domestic silverware, the Carling Knockout presents Chiefs and Sundowns with an immediate opportunity to rebuild confidence, while Pirates will aim to maintain their momentum.
