Unstoppable Rulani: Mokwena Leads Pyramids to Stunning 15 Wins in a Row

South African coach Rulani Mokwena has turned Pyramids FC into a winning machine. On Saturday night his side beat El Daklyeh 2-0 in the Egypt Cup to make it 15 victories in a row across all competitions.

The Egyptian giants never looked like slowing down. They had already collected a 14th successive win earlier in the week and carried that confidence straight into the cup match. Mokwena’s team started on the front foot and took the lead after just eight minutes. Youssef Obama collected a through pass and finished neatly into the bottom corner to put Pyramids ahead.

They controlled the game from that moment. El Daklyeh barely threatened, and Pyramids went into half-time with a one-goal lead and complete control. In the second half Mokwena made a change, bringing on Ahmed Abdel Qader for Awouda Al-Fakhoury to keep the pressure high.

The second goal arrived when Mostafa Fathi cut inside from the edge of the area and unleashed a powerful shot into the top corner. Pyramids pushed for more late on but were happy to settle for the 2-0 scoreline that booked their place in the next round.

This result keeps Pyramids at the top of the Egyptian Premier League and shows how well Mokwena has settled in Cairo. The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has won every competitive match since taking charge at the start of the season. He has built a side that scores freely and rarely concedes, putting real pressure on the country’s traditional powers.

For South African football fans the run is especially sweet. Mokwena, who comes from a famous football family in Johannesburg, has taken the lessons he learned at home and is now making a big impression in North Africa. At just 39 years old he continues to prove that local coaches can succeed at the highest levels on the continent.

With the league title race heating up and continental games still to come, Mokwena’s Pyramids show no signs of slowing down. Fifteen straight wins is already special. The way they are playing suggests they have every chance of making it even longer.
