Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye has questioned whether Kaizer Motaung Jr has the leadership qualities needed to manage one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs, pointing to the importance of communication, accessibility and the ability to listen to different opinions.
Khanye, who has regularly shared his views on Amakhosi’s performances and management, believes that leading a club of Chiefs’ stature requires more than occupying a senior position. In his view, effective leadership depends on building relationships with players and staff, understanding their concerns and creating an environment where people feel comfortable expressing themselves.
During his assessment, Khanye spoke positively about his experience with Bobby Motaung, recalling how the former general manager interacted with players during his time at Naturena.
“For me, Bobby, the one I knew, was good even though everyone has their mistakes,” Khanye said.
The former midfielder explained that he found Bobby approachable and felt comfortable discussing problems with him. According to Khanye, being willing to listen when players face difficulties is an important quality for anyone responsible for managing a football club.
However, he expressed doubts about whether Kaizer Motaung Jr was adequately prepared for his management responsibilities, drawing on his experience of playing alongside him before Junior became involved in the club’s leadership.
“With Junior, I played with him, and I am not sure he was ready to manage the team. You have to be able to interact with the people,” Khanye remarked.
Khanye also questioned whether Motaung Jr was sufficiently open to hearing opinions that differ from his own, suggesting that the ability to engage with others is an important part of successful leadership.
His comments add another dimension to the ongoing debate about management at Kaizer Chiefs, where supporters continue to expect better performances, greater consistency and progress towards challenging for major trophies.
Amakhosi remain one of the most closely followed clubs in South African football, meaning decisions made by the leadership often attract considerable public attention.
Nevertheless, Khanye’s remarks represent his personal assessment and do not, on their own, establish whether Motaung Jr has the necessary managerial abilities.
The debate ultimately raises an important question for Kaizer Chiefs: how much does effective leadership behind the scenes influence the club’s ability to achieve success on the pitch?
