Jerry Sikhosana Questions Orlando Pirates Over Treatment of Club Legends
Former Orlando Pirates striker Jerry Sikhosana has expressed his disappointment with his former club, claiming that he was denied a ticket when he sought to attend an event as a club legend, despite receiving assistance from arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
Sikhosana, one of the most recognisable figures in Pirates' history, believes former players who contributed significantly to the club's success deserve greater recognition and respect long after their playing careers have ended.
His comments have sparked fresh debate about how South African football clubs treat their former stars, particularly those who helped build their identities and establish their reputations over the years.
The former striker recalled an experience in which he approached Orlando Pirates hoping to secure a ticket, only to feel overlooked by the club he once proudly represented.
According to Sikhosana, the situation became even more disappointing when he received assistance from Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates' fiercest rivals, instead.
He explained that he was given a ticket by Chiefs, despite spending his playing days helping Pirates compete against the Soweto giants in one of South African football's biggest rivalries.
Sikhosana also recalled encountering Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung as he was leaving. After learning that he had been asking for tickets, Motaung reportedly checked on him and reassured him that the club recognised who he was.
Her response left Sikhosana reflecting on the difference between the attention he received from a rival club and what he felt was a lack of recognition from his former employers.
The experience prompted him to question why the people he served during his time at Pirates had seemingly failed to offer him the same consideration.
For Sikhosana, the issue goes beyond obtaining a ticket. It concerns appreciation, belonging and the responsibility clubs have towards individuals who played important roles in their history.
He also highlighted the significance of the star on Orlando Pirates' jersey, arguing that supporters should remember the contribution he made to the club's achievements.
"When you look at the Pirates jersey with a star, the first impression should be, 'Thank you Jerry Sikhosana, you gave us a star'," he said.
The remark underlines his belief that his contribution should remain part of the club's identity and be acknowledged by those who represent it today.
Sikhosana remains a celebrated name among Pirates supporters, having earned a reputation as a dangerous striker during his playing career. His legacy is closely associated with the club's historic success and the fierce rivalry that defines the Soweto Derby.
His criticism is likely to renew discussions about the importance of maintaining relationships with former players, especially club legends whose contributions helped shape generations of supporters.
While his comments reflect his personal experience, they raise a broader question for South African football: should clubs do more to ensure that their former stars continue to feel valued and respected?
For Sikhosana, the answer is clear. After everything he believes he gave Orlando Pirates, he wants the club to show that his service has not been forgotten.
