Breaking: As Komphela and Mngqithi emerge as interim contenders, Miguel Cardoso's future at Sundowns is uncertain.
After being shockingly eliminated from the CAF Champions League by Angolan team Wiliete SC, Mamelodi Sundowns may be on the verge of another significant managerial change.
After the reigning champions failed to qualify for the group stages of Africa's top club championship, rumours have claimed that the Brazilians are thinking of firing head coach Miguel Cardoso. The club's next course of action and the alleged departure have not, however, been formally confirmed.
The Portuguese tactician, who led Masandawana to Champions League victory the previous season, is under fresh criticism as a result of the dismal continental campaign. The Sundowns were expected to defend their throne, but their journey came to an abrupt end.
Sundowns played out a 1-1 tie at Loftus Versfeld on Friday after Wiliete held them to a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola. The Pretoria giants took an early lead thanks to Tashreeq Matthews, but just after halftime, seasoned Angolan scorer Mabululu tied the score.
After that, Wiliete persisted in securing qualifying under the away-goals rule, leaving Sundowns to consider a costly defeat in front of their home crowd.
The club's management is reportedly contemplating former Sundowns mentor Manqoba Mngqithi and assistant coach Steve Komphela as potential temporary replacements in the event that Cardoso departs.
As a member of the technical team throughout Sundowns' prior successful campaigns, Komphela is already acquainted with the club's organisational structures and working environment. If the club decides to make an instant move, his experience might make him a viable choice.
Mngqithi, on the other hand, contributes a wealth of Sundowns setup knowledge. The seasoned coach was a member of the technical team that helped the Tshwane giants establish their dominance in South African football. In order to broaden his expertise in African club football, he has also coached the formidable Young Africans (Yanga) of Tanzania.
According to additional sources, Cardoso's representatives are scheduled to meet with Sundowns management on Monday to talk about the potential termination of his employment and the associated financial settlement.
Although there has been no formal announcement of the planned meeting or settlement, these talks could decide if the club and coach decide to terminate their working relationship.
After the shock Champions League exit, Cardoso's job has been a big topic of discussion. However, Sundowns still have domestic games to compete in, so any choice they make on the technical team might have a big impact on the rest of the campaign.
As rumours about Cardoso's future continue to circulate, fans will be waiting for clarification from the club for the time being.
After one of the most disappointing performances of their continental season, Sundowns may soon have to make a critical decision regarding their leadership and direction if the stated developments come to pass.
