Chiefs Wanted Seven Players With R20 Million, Claims Mngqithi

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has reached a major milestone in his new role with Young Africans after leading the Tanzanian giants into the CAF Champions League group stages. The achievement marks another positive chapter in Mngqithi's early tenure at the club. His time in Tanzania began on a high note when he secured the Community Shield, and he has now guided the team into the group phase of Africa’s premier club competition.

Young Africans sealed their qualification with a decisive 4-1 victory against Madagascan side CFFA in the second leg of their second preliminary round tie. That result completed an impressive 8-1 aggregate victory, making Yanga the first club to book a place in this season's group stage. Ibrahim Kazimoto gave the home side the lead in the 27th minute, setting the tone for a dominant performance. The team maintained control after the break, with Selemani Mwalimu scoring twice in quick succession during the 49th and 53rd minutes to put the tie well out of reach. Although CFFA pulled a goal back in the 75th minute, teenage player Juma Issa Abushuri restored the three-goal cushion in the 82nd minute to finalize the result.

Beyond his current success in East Africa, Mngqithi recently reflected on a past opportunity to take charge of South African side Kaizer Chiefs. He claimed that he turned down an offer from Amakhosi due to concerns over their proposed transfer budget. According to Mngqithi, the club offered R20 million to bring in seven new players, a figure he felt was inadequate for proper squad rebuilding. He noted that during his time with Mamelodi Sundowns, a sum of R20 million was often required to secure just one high-caliber player from the local league. While these details remain unverified independently, they highlight his perspectives on the financial backing needed to compete at the highest level.

As Kaizer Chiefs continue working to strengthen their squad at home, Mngqithi remains focused on building his coaching profile abroad. His recent qualification success adds valuable continental experience to his career. The main challenge now for Mngqithi and Young Africans will be sustaining this momentum as they prepare to face significantly tougher opponents in the upcoming group matches.
