Wiliete’s strategies that frustrated Downs in Angola

Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi has explained the plans his side used to hold CAF Champions League holders Mamelodi Sundowns to a goalless draw in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie. The match took place on Sunday at the Estadio Nacional Tundavala in Lubango, Angola.

Sundowns, who started the defence of their title after receiving a bye in the first round, struggled to break down a well-organised Wiliete team. The Brazilians controlled much of the ball and created several chances, but they could not find the net. Goalkeeper Elber Binha made important saves, while the home defence stayed compact and limited clear opportunities.

Bianchi’s side relied on a direct and physical approach. They used long balls to bypass the midfield and stretch Sundowns’ defence with quick wingers. This style made it difficult for the visitors to press high and play their usual possession game. Wiliete also stayed disciplined at the back and looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Former Orlando Pirates winger Gilberto caused problems with his pace, while striker Mabululu forced a save from Ricardo Goss.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso later admitted that his team struggled to impose their style against Wiliete’s direct play. He noted that the Angolans operated at a high level, similar to other strong sides from the country, and that the pitch conditions after rain added to the challenge. Midfielder Teboho Mokoena was forced off with an injury before half-time, which further disrupted Sundowns’ rhythm.

The 0-0 result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of Friday’s return leg at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. Sundowns will need a win on home soil to reach the group stage, as a draw would not be enough under the away goals rule. Wiliete have shown they can frustrate a top side and will travel with belief that they can cause an upset.

Bianchi had said before the match that his players would not feel inferior to Sundowns and that everything would be decided on the pitch. Their performance in Angola proved that careful preparation and a clear plan can make life difficult for even the continent’s best teams. The second leg now promises to be a tough contest as Sundowns look to finish the job in front of their supporters.
