Former Pirates Coach Reveals Amakhosi’s Big Problem

KAIZER CHIEFS DEFENCE BOMBSHELL! Former Pirates Coach Questions Amakhosi’s Defensive Quality

Kaizer Chiefs’ defensive struggles have come under renewed scrutiny after a former Orlando Pirates coach raised concerns about the quality of players available to the Soweto giants, sparking fresh debate about what is preventing Amakhosi from becoming more consistent at the back.

The assessment highlights the possibility that Chiefs’ problems extend beyond tactical organisation, with questions being raised about whether the squad possesses enough quality in key defensive positions to compete against South Africa’s strongest teams.

Although defensive discipline and tactical awareness remain important, individual errors, poor positioning and weaknesses in one-on-one battles can undermine even the most organised teams. Chiefs must therefore determine whether their difficulties stem from tactical shortcomings or a lack of quality in certain areas.

Former Chippa United coach Dan Malesela previously called for Chiefs to strengthen their centre-back options, emphasising the importance of having reliable defenders capable of handling the demands of top-flight football.

The concerns have become more significant following Amakhosi’s 1-0 defeat to Zambian side Red Arrows in the CAF Confederation Cup on October 17, 2026. Chiefs conceded in the 76th minute when Alassane Diarra scored from a corner, leaving the South African club needing a stronger performance in the return leg.

Conceding from a set piece has once again raised questions about defensive concentration, communication and the ability to deal with aerial threats.

For coach Fernando Da Cruz and his technical team, addressing these weaknesses will require a thorough assessment of the current squad. Improving midfield protection, establishing dependable defensive partnerships and maintaining consistent team selection could help reduce the number of opportunities opponents create.

Recruiting experienced defenders may also become an option if the club identifies positions where additional quality is required. However, new signings alone would not solve the problem without improved organisation and collective responsibility.

With expectations remaining high among supporters, Chiefs must find answers quickly. Their ability to improve defensively could prove crucial to their ambitions in domestic competitions and their hopes of progressing further in continental football.
