Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has made it clear that he wants to help veteran striker Bradley Grobler break the Premier Soccer League's all-time scoring record as the experienced forward continues his career in South Africa.
Grobler is closing in on the record currently held by Namibian international Peter Shalulile, who has scored 134 goals in the PSL. The 32-year-old striker previously played for Highlands Park and Mamelodi Sundowns before moving to Tanzanian giants Young Africans.
The 38-year-old Grobler has scored 130 league goals, leaving him just four goals behind Shalulile. With Shalulile now playing outside South Africa, Grobler has an opportunity to overtake him and become the league's leading goalscorer of all time.
However, injuries have affected Grobler during the later stages of his career, making it difficult for him to maintain consistent playing time. Despite these challenges, Hunt believes the experienced striker still has the desire and determination to continue playing at the highest level.
Hunt, who has worked with Grobler throughout his career, explained that a player's attitude towards training becomes particularly important as they grow older. According to the Stellenbosch coach, the decision to continue playing depends largely on whether a footballer still has the motivation to train and compete every day.
"I said to Bradley the most important thing when you're getting older in football, do you still want to come to training, do you still want to do it every day? But once you lose that, then you must retire," Hunt told the media.
The coach added that Grobler remains motivated and is still determined to reach the historic milestone. Hunt also believes Stellenbosch can play an important role in helping the striker achieve his personal goal.
"But he still wants it; he is obviously pushing for that PSL record, I will try to help him get there," Hunt said.
The Stellenbosch coach also stressed that the relationship between the club and the striker benefits both parties, as Grobler's experience and ability in front of goal remain valuable to the team.
"He needs us; we need him because he can do it. He's got one already and there's still a long season to go. He trains every day; he looks okay, obviously he's not going to play 90 minutes every game," Hunt explained.
Grobler has already started contributing goals this season, giving him further encouragement as he pursues the record. Although his age and injury history mean that Stellenbosch will need to manage his minutes carefully, Hunt remains confident that the striker can still make a difference.
With a long season ahead, Grobler will have opportunities to reduce the gap and challenge Shalulile's record. If he stays fit and continues scoring, the veteran forward could make history in the PSL before bringing his playing career to an end.
