Dolphins Cricket CEO Heinrich Strydom has promised to investigate why so few fans turned up for the Proteas' Test match against Australia at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.
Fewer than 20,000 spectators attended the five-day encounter, leaving cricket administrators with questions about how to attract more supporters to Test cricket.
The low turnout was particularly noticeable because Durban was also hosting the sold-out MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium. While football fans filled the stands for the eagerly anticipated final, Kingsmead struggled to attract a comparable crowd for the international cricket fixture.
The contrast has put the spotlight on the challenge of getting more South Africans through the gates for Test cricket, especially when other major sporting events compete for public attention.
Strydom has acknowledged the disappointing attendance and promised an internal review to establish what may have contributed to the low numbers.
For cricket supporters, the issue goes beyond the number of empty seats. Test matches offer a different sporting experience, with games stretching over five days and requiring fans to commit more time to watching their teams.
However, the turnout in Durban has raised questions about whether cricket authorities need to rethink how they promote the format and encourage supporters to attend matches.
The review could help the Dolphins identify areas for improvement, including scheduling, marketing and the overall experience of watching cricket at Kingsmead.
Although no specific reasons for the low attendance have been confirmed, the contrast with the sold-out football final has made the issue difficult to ignore.
Away from the attendance concerns, the Proteas had a difficult time on the field, suffering a 214-run defeat against Australia.
The result handed Australia a 1-0 lead in the series ahead of the second Test in Gqeberha.
The defeat was another disappointment for South African supporters, who will be hoping the team can respond in the next encounter.
However, the Durban Test has also left cricket administrators with an important question: how can they turn interest in the Proteas into stronger match-day attendance?
The contrasting attendance figures at Kingsmead and Moses Mabhida Stadium have highlighted the challenge of attracting supporters to different sporting codes.
The sold-out MTN8 final showed that Durban can draw large crowds for major sporting events. Cricket, meanwhile, faces the task of convincing more fans that attending a five-day Test match is worth their time.
For the Dolphins, Strydom's promised review could be an important step towards understanding what went wrong and finding ways to improve attendance at future matches.
As the Proteas prepare for the second Test in Gqeberha, the focus will be on their response against Australia. But the disappointing turnout at Kingsmead has also opened a conversation about the future of Test cricket and how the sport can reconnect with supporters.
