Komphela Speaks Out: Racism and Spitting Sparked Angola Fight

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has finally explained what pushed him over the edge during a heated clash with Wiliete SC coach Beto Bianchi in Angola.

The incident happened after Sunday’s match. Bianchi later needed medical attention in hospital. Until now, details of the confrontation remained unclear. South African sports broadcaster Robert Marawa shared Komphela’s side of the story on his Monday show after speaking directly to the coach.

According to Marawa, Komphela said his biggest weakness is disrespect and racism. He felt both were directed at him during the encounter. Komphela claimed Bianchi swore at him in Portuguese and that he understood exactly what was being said. Marawa refused to repeat the words on air, saying they were too strong for national radio.

The moment that hurt most, Komphela said, was when Bianchi spat at him. He had gone to check on players who were warming up after the match. Bianchi was waiting for him, following an earlier problem at half-time. The Angolan coach then followed him into the tunnel.

Komphela admits he hit back, but insists it was self-defence. He told Marawa that Bianchi had crossed a line with repeated disrespect. “He touched a nerve and that is what sparked the reaction,” Marawa reported. Komphela believes he had no other choice but to protect himself.

The story has sparked strong reactions among South African football fans. Many have stood by Komphela, saying no one should accept racism or physical disrespect. The full facts of the case are still emerging, and both clubs and football authorities may look into the matter further.

For now, Komphela’s account has given the public a clearer picture of what he says happened on that tense night in Angola.
