Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy is attracting attention with his impressive performances for Sabah FK, raising questions about whether he deserves an opportunity to represent Bafana Bafana under head coach Pitso Mosimane.

The South African defender has reportedly been delivering encouraging performances for the club, demonstrating composure, discipline and reliability at the back. His statistics have drawn attention, particularly his passing accuracy and ability to help his team maintain defensive stability during league matches.

McCarthy has recorded an impressive 93% passing accuracy, highlighting his ability to distribute the ball effectively and contribute to his team's build-up play. For a defender, maintaining such a high passing percentage can be valuable, especially in a team that relies on possession and organised movement from the back.

His defensive record has also attracted interest. Sabah FK have reportedly conceded just one league goal in matches in which McCarthy completed the full 90 minutes. Although this statistic alone does not establish his individual contribution to the team's defensive performances, it provides an encouraging indication of the side's results during those appearances.

The former Kaizer Chiefs player will be hoping to maintain his current form as he continues his career abroad. Performances at club level can play an important role in determining whether a player receives international recognition, particularly when consistency, tactical awareness and defensive discipline are essential qualities for national team selection.

McCarthy's progress could also place him back in conversations about South Africa's defensive options. Bafana Bafana need players who can perform consistently for their clubs while demonstrating the qualities required to compete at international level.

However, securing a national team call-up would depend on several factors, including the defender's overall performances, fitness, competition for places and the technical team's assessment of his suitability for the squad. His impressive statistics may strengthen his case, but sustained performances would be important in convincing the selectors.

The discussion surrounding McCarthy has therefore sparked an important question among South African football supporters: does he deserve an opportunity to represent his country?

With his reported passing accuracy and encouraging defensive record, the former Kaizer Chiefs defender has given fans reasons to discuss his international prospects. Whether Pitso Mosimane considers him for Bafana Bafana remains to be seen, but maintaining his current level could help keep his name in the conversation.
