Moroka Swallows’ return to competitive football has revived memories of the club’s glorious past, with former sports broadcaster Walter Mokoena leading a new project aimed at restoring the famous Dube Birds.
The revived club, now known as Moroka Swallows Sports Club, is beginning its journey in the SAFA Johannesburg Regional League. Its return has brought renewed hope among supporters who want to see the historic Soweto side compete in South Africa’s professional leagues again.
Swallows have a rich history in South African football, having won major domestic honours and built a loyal following over several decades. Their achievements in competitions such as the Nedbank Cup and MTN8 helped establish them as one of the country’s recognised football institutions.
However, the club has experienced serious setbacks in recent years. Financial difficulties and instability disrupted its progress, and in 2024 its top-flight status was sold to Marumo Gallants. The latest revival represents a fresh attempt to rebuild the club’s identity and restore its place in the football landscape.
Mokoena has outlined an ambitious vision for the new organisation, which will include sports such as netball and basketball alongside football. He has also indicated that discussions are underway with the City of Johannesburg about securing suitable venues, particularly in Soweto.
Returning to the Premier Soccer League, however, will require patience, strong administration, financial stability and success on the pitch. Starting in the regional league means Swallows must work their way through the South African football pyramid, earning promotion through the relevant divisions.
The club’s first reported match in the regional competition ended in a 3-2 defeat to Clever Boys, showing that the rebuilding process will involve challenges from the outset.
Despite that setback, the return of the Dube Birds gives supporters a reason to hope. Their history provides a foundation, but sustained progress will depend on how effectively the new project is managed.
A return to the PSL remains an ambition rather than a certainty. For Swallows fans, the immediate priority will be supporting the team as it begins the difficult journey back towards professional football.
