Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly exploring possible coaching alternatives amid growing speculation surrounding the future of head coach Fernando da Cruz, although there has been no official confirmation from the club that the French tactician has resigned or is set to leave Naturena.
The uncertainty comes at a crucial stage of the season, with Chiefs preparing for the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates. Reports claiming that Da Cruz attempted to resign have fuelled questions about the stability of the technical team, with the club allegedly considering contingency plans should the situation change.
However, the reports remain speculation at this stage. Da Cruz is said to have returned to his coaching responsibilities following the alleged resignation drama, while club chairman Kaizer Motaung has reportedly continued to support the coach. There has been no official announcement from Chiefs confirming plans to dismiss or replace him.
Pressure on Da Cruz has nevertheless increased following Chiefs' reported 1-0 defeat to Zambia's Red Arrows. The result has intensified scrutiny of the team's performances and tactical approach, with some supporters questioning player selections and the use of certain players in unfamiliar positions.
Should Chiefs eventually decide to make a coaching change, Sead Ramovic has reportedly emerged as one possible candidate. Ramovic has experience in South African football from his time with TS Galaxy and has also worked in North Africa with CR Belouizdad. Claims that Chiefs have already contacted his representatives, however, have not been independently confirmed.
For now, Da Cruz's immediate future could be influenced heavily by the Soweto Derby. A positive result against Orlando Pirates would provide the coach with an opportunity to ease pressure and strengthen confidence in his leadership.
Conversely, another disappointing performance could increase scrutiny from supporters and intensify speculation about his position.
With no official confirmation of a resignation or coaching change, Da Cruz remains in charge of Chiefs. The club's immediate priority will be improving performances and producing results, particularly in one of South African football's biggest fixtures.
