Wiliete SC head coach Roberto Bianchi has described his team’s elimination of Mamelodi Sundowns from the CAF Champions League as a major milestone in the Angolan club’s development, despite facing challenges before the decisive match.

Bianchi revealed that Wiliete were unable to travel with their full squad after three players encountered immigration problems at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa. The absence of the players presented an additional challenge for the Angolan side as they prepared for their continental encounter against one of Africa’s established football clubs.

“The day before, we had immigration issues at OR Tambo, a few players, three players couldn’t make it to the game.”

Despite the setback, Wiliete managed to eliminate Sundowns from the competition, producing a result that Bianchi believes demonstrates the progress his team has made. The achievement is particularly significant for a club seeking to strengthen its reputation beyond Angola and compete more confidently against established opponents on the African stage.

Sundowns entered the competition with considerable expectations, having built a reputation as one of the continent’s prominent clubs. Their elimination by Wiliete therefore represents a notable development in the tournament and an opportunity for the Angolan side to celebrate its progress.

For Bianchi, the result goes beyond simply advancing in a competition. It also provides encouragement for the club’s players and technical team, demonstrating that they can overcome difficult circumstances and challenge opponents with greater continental experience.

The immigration difficulties that prevented three players from participating make the outcome even more significant from Wiliete’s perspective. However, the club’s achievement will ultimately be measured by its ability to build on this success and continue developing its performances in future competitions.

Wiliete’s elimination of Sundowns is a reminder that continental football can produce unexpected outcomes, with preparation, teamwork and execution playing important roles in determining results.
